I learned today that it's legal to keep sugar gliders as pets in the U.S. I am slightly shocked.

Date: 2003-06-24 05:25 pm (UTC)It reminds me of the case of a species of Wallaby. Here they are endangered. In some European countries they are bred in squallid conditions for the pet trade.
It just seems wrong that such a creature should be a common pet.

Date: 2003-06-24 10:25 pm (UTC)Sugargliders are recommended to be in a big cage with a few others and to play with each of them at least 2 hours a day.
African pygmi hedgehogs were a fad here and unfortanatly alot of them were destroyed. Now you can only get them through a breeder. I have my second one. They are sold for children and if I were a child I would not want her.
It is very sad how animals are exploited.

Date: 2003-06-25 08:12 am (UTC)On one side making them available as pets makes them more valuable to people, therefore they will do more to save the species (what I like to call the "cute and furry" principle).
On the other side natives require a lot more special care and attention than a dog or a cat, and many people won't treat them properly.
Pet licences are so badly needed.
