I remember in my teen years I'd always fancy being in a band.  Once I even made some posters for a band, asking for other folks who'd like to join.  But I had no idea what actually went into BEING a band.

I also thought a song was written by someone, and it was something they came up with in their head then wrote or played the whole thing and recorded it like that.   I had absolutely no clue that songs are generally a case of someone writing music, someone else writing lyrics and finding which two pieces fit, then a producer going over the recording and chopping and changing and rearranging until it sounded good and that was the finished piece.

I've only learned about this process really in the last few years.  No wonder I was never able to actually be in a band or write any actual music, I
misunderstood the whole process.  I feel it's the same way for a lot of things.

Alessandro Cortini wears many hats. In the live lineup of Nine Inch Nails he might be playing keyboards and synths, or he could be on bass or guitar. He’s in another band called Modwheelmood and releases solo ambient synth material under the name Blindoldfreak as well as his actual name. And he had a now defunct solo synthpop project called SONOIO (“it’s me”).

I remember first hearing this song (and seeing the video) just after my sinus operation in June, and I was immediately hooked. This is so goddamn catchy. Then a bit later I read the lyrics and they were also heavily relatable. I still squee a little bit and sing along loudly whenever it comes on when I’m randomly playing stuff.

BEST ALBUM
Hesitation Marks - Nine Inch Nails

LastFM lets you click a little heart to indicate a “loved” song. Since I first listened to this album in May (yeah I as a few years late to the party) every song on it has received a little heart. When I was into NIN in the 1990s Trent Reznor was the “King of Angst”. In the intervening years he’s kicked a cocaine and alcohol habit, beefed up, gotten married and had 4 kids. These days the music still has a dark streak, but it’s less destructive. Seeing as I too have grown up in these intervening years, newer NIN still has the same relevance to me as the older stuff did in my teens. This years Bad Witch LP was great, but for me HM has just the right sounds and lyrics for me to just to be able to listen to it over and over and over.

Until recently I was peripherally aware of the song Strange Fruit, but I figured it was something like a jazzy version of Spill The Wine, "Eat the strange fruit, get high" etc.

The song features in the soundtrack to The Man In The High Castle and I actually listened to it.

WOW

Boy was I wrong about it's subject matter.  This song is brutal, visceral and deeply sad.  And it doesn't need any interpretation, it speaks for itself.

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The buzzing eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here's a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot for the trees to drop
Here's a strange and bitter crop

Unfortunately in the last 10 years I've tended to just download MP3s or buy Greatest Hits albums. But some standouts that I can think of right away, in no particular order.

1. G - Garbage
2. The Wall - Pink Floyd
3. Stranger In This Town - Richie Sambora
4. Kick - INXS
5. Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails
6. Superunknown - Soundgarden

9. Achtung Baby - U2
10. Grace - Jeff Buckley

I love this one! So there will be a round two.

1. I don't believe in an interventionist god... - Nick Cave - Into My Arms. Ridiculously soppy but I adore it anyway.
2. You broke my heart 'cause I couldn't dance... - Brian Poole and the Tremoloes - Do You Love Me? I'm ashamed [livejournal.com profile] mix_o_choc didn't get this seeing as he sang it at karaoke.
3. How can you see into my eyes like open doors... - Of course, that's Bring Me To Life by Evanescence.
4. Ladies and gentlemen. Wear sunscreen! - The tricky one! The Sunscreen Marketing Board Presents... by Three Dead Trolls In A Baggie. "Why chew gum when a small piece of cardboard soaked in sunscreen makes for long lasting taste satisfaction!"
5. Oh it's a happening thing, and it's happening to you... - This was kinda tough. It's Rain by Dragon.
6. I guess this time you're really leaving... - After much hemming and hawing Sarah figured this out. I'll Be There For You by Bon Jovi.
7. Lonely lovers cry, why me Lord I didn't mean to do it... - I would have been extremely impressed if anyone got this. It's a song called Dead Is Dead by a guy called Terry Lee Hale. It's off Sub-Pop 200. Kinda obscure...
8. Woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night... - Well I knew Sarah would get this one. Church Of Desire by Richie Sambora (he's the guitarist from Bon Jovi, his first solo album rocks).
9. Love, love is a verb... - Love is a doing word. Seems I misheard every other lyric in this song however. Teardrop by Massive Attack.
10. My baby's gone to jail... - Of course Jakie the DAAS fan would get this. Shit, the lyric is even the title. My Baby's Gone To Jail - Doug Anthony All Stars.
11. All packed up heading for unknown... - Now I actually had to Google for this lyric because I couldn't decipher it by listening. It's Good Times by Sprung Monkey. First full track on the Music For Our Mother Ocean compilation and a pretty funky punky song.
12. This generation rules the nation with version... - That old 80's classic. Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth.
13. My love of life just gets stronger... - And the next lyric gives away the song. As The Days Go By - Daryl Braithwaite.
14. Everybody has a ghost... - C'mon people, another title in the lyric. This is Ghost by Live.
15. Stand beside me all the while no matter what goes wrong... - Mum must have downloaded this one but I had heard the song before. Apparently it's called True Love Never Runs Smooth and it's performed by Gene Pitney.
16. I'd like to believe that you love me... - I'd like to believe that you care. I'd like to believe you're the one I can trust. You're the one who will always be there... erm, yeah. Hunters & Collectors - Where Do You Go?
17. It's not hard to know what you're thinking... - Even I forgot what this song was for a bit, and I know the song well. Fade To Grey by Jars Of Clay.
18. I wanna run, I want to hide... - Can a band get any better than U2? Of course this is their big hit Where The Streets Have No Name.
19. Well you got me working so hard lately... - Nine Inch Nails - Ringfinger. One of my faves off the Pretty Hate Machine album.
20. Son she said, have I got a little story for you... - Grunge anthem Alive by Pearl Jam.

1. Go to http://musicoutfitters.com.
2. Enter the year you graduated from high school in the search function and get the list of 100 most popular songs of that year.
3. Bold the songs you like, strike through the ones you hate and underline your favorite. Do nothing to the ones you don't remember (or don't care about).

I've done a few other years. And I've italiscised the songs I loved then but don't so much now.

I can see another CD being made (or at least tracklisted) soon. I just have this vibe. It's gonna have Cryin' by Aerosmith and On The Edge Of A Broken Heart by Bon Jovi and some Poison and Motley Crue and maybe Van Halen, Def Leppard or Meatloaf. Still figuring it out. Now there's not even breathing room, between pleasure and pain

Went out in the boat with Don & Cynthia this afternoon. Bloody awesome, saw loads of birds and got throughly soaked on the way back because the bay was so choppy. Was as good as taking a swim.

Darn, I wish Matt was online. I wanna tell him how I looked in a wet shirt today. *grinz*

What's better than Soundgarden or Led Zeppelin?

Soundgarden covering Led Zeppelin.

I'll write a long post re: this awesomeness later.

I also need someone who plays V:tM to help me out with a character sheet.
