I learned today that it's legal to keep sugar gliders as pets in the U.S. I am slightly shocked.

Actually in the eastern states you can buy some australian natives (such as the mentioned sugar gliders) as companion animals, or at least you could in the 90's, maybe the law has changed since then? You also don't need a permit to keep reptiles over there like you do here in the west but there is pressure to change these laws. Which is silly given the number of abused/neglected domestic animals we already have.

Yeah, I'm a bit of fence sitter when it comes to keeping natives as pets.

On one side making them available as pets makes them more valuable to people, therefore they will do more to save the species (what I like to call the "cute and furry" principle).

On the other side natives require a lot more special care and attention than a dog or a cat, and many people won't treat them properly.

Pet licences are so badly needed.
