I learned today that it's legal to keep sugar gliders as pets in the U.S. I am slightly shocked.

They're native animals in Australia. And quite possibly threatened or vunerable status. Here it's illegal to keep any native animal without a licence. I imagine they'd have a lot of special needs and most pet owners are not scrupulous enough to meet these needs.

It reminds me of the case of a species of Wallaby. Here they are endangered. In some European countries they are bred in squallid conditions for the pet trade.

It just seems wrong that such a creature should be a common pet.

Ah..I didn't realize they were close if not all ready threatened here. I really don't know much about them as far as being pets in the US. I've only come across them once or twice in pet stores and I don't know anyone who has them. But that is a bit odd that they are allowed to be pets if they're a threatened species. You're not supposed to keep animals that are on the threatened or endangered species list in the US without a lisence or permit
