Date: 2004-05-18 04:25 pm (UTC)and would you rather one post with 12 pics in it, or 12 posts of 1 pic each?
If she want's people to see them, rather than just pass by the hidden pictures, then it's her journal to do that with. everyone else can remove her if it annoys them too much. personally it's less hassle to scroll past it for the one or two times i check before it falls off the page, and actually need to go past it, than to remove from friends and re-add the next day.
But maybe that's just me.

Date: 2004-05-18 04:41 pm (UTC)I would rather she do what any polite and considerate LJ user does, and post the first pic or two uncut, and then the remaining ones behind an lj-cut. Every community I know of have rules like that...
Yes, it is her own journal and she should be able to post what she likes. But that doesn't mean she shouldn't show a bit of respect for others. I'm sure if I went and posted a pic of goatse or tubgirl on my journal people would be annoyed at me. A "But it's my journal, I'll do what I want!" attitude doesn't make it right.
IMO, It's really quite hypocritical of BJ to condemn smokers for being so inconsiderate of others when she goes and does stuff like this...

Date: 2004-05-18 11:28 pm (UTC)Matt got it right - it was uncut because I wanted people to actually see it, it will scroll off friends lists in a few days (or less) and be forgotten.
There is also a format you can use to stop pics (and these ones were relatively small) from screwing up your friends pages - I've needed to use it because a lot of journals I read contain pics and links that are WAY too wide.
And since when have you had dialup?

Date: 2004-05-18 11:44 pm (UTC)If you were to just post the one or two of the pics and then have an lj-cut saying "CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REMAINING 22...", people who care will click on the lj-cut to view the rest. If they don't care, they won't get annoyed at you. Everyone wins.
I was talking about this with a friend, who made the following remark:
"If you want to post graphic pictures of you and 3 sheep.... so be it, but for other peoples sanity's sake learn to lj-cut. Same if you want to post the entire text of "the lord of the rings" (plus the Silmarillion & the hobbit) on your lj. Feel free (though Mr JRR's son may have something to say about this), but don't be surprised if i defriend you."
I may have phrased it badly myself in parts of this discussion, but that's essentially how I feel about it as well.
YOu said: And since when have you had dialup?
I don't. I have ADSL. What's your point? Bandwidth is bandwidth. Besides, I know many of our mutual friends are still on dialup...

Date: 2004-05-19 09:22 am (UTC)What if the 2 pics she chose not to cut were not the nicest ones, or someone wasn't interested in those items, but would have been interested in the other items that they never saw cos they didn't follow the cut (or reply and look at the content, cos LJ shows it all then too).
Posting pictures of a graphic nature, or copywrited text, are breaches of actual laws so would be illegal, even if "hidden" behind a lj-cut. however, if you were really into "you and 3 sheep" then chances are your friends list would either contain like minded people, or would shrink rapidly as people choose to not have you as an LJ friend because they have decided they aren't interested in seeing what you have to say. (I believe i've covered the defriending issue repeatedly in all my comments. you should remember LJ is not real-life)
The beauty of an lj-cut is that there could actually be anything behind it, and doesn't need to be clearly defined by the actual cut. so in effect it could be even more dangerous to cut things, because people are curious by nature and will look.
Oh, and to take up a point BJ raised and you ignored. there are many ways to restrict the pictures. LJ provide a formatting for this themselves, and most browsers have an option to turn off graphics too.

Date: 2004-05-19 12:16 pm (UTC)I believe that qualifies as mentioning smoking. She was completely missing the point of my reference to the smoking issue. Hence I was trying to make sure the argument didn't go off on an unrelated tangent.
What if the 2 pics she chose not to cut were not the nicest ones, or someone wasn't interested in those items, but would have been interested in the other items that they never saw cos they didn't follow the cut (or reply and look at the content, cos LJ shows it all then too).
The odds of that happening would be quite low. If the person is interested in jewelry but is too lazy to look at the other pics, then that's their loss. It doesn't mean BJ stoop to accommodate them when marketing her jewelry. It's like a spammer arguing that he needed to email everyone on the 'net just in case they wanted his product but never discovered his online store.
And everyone on her friends list has seen most (if not all) of these pics already, so if they were interested then they probably would have commented to the original post, or clicked on an lj-cut to see if this post had the one they liked.
Posting pictures of a graphic nature, or copywrited text, are breaches of actual laws so would be illegal, even if "hidden" behind a lj-cut.
Redundant point. You know they was just examples.
however, if you were really into "you and 3 sheep" then chances are your friends list would either contain like minded people, or would shrink rapidly as people choose to not have you as an LJ friend because they have decided they aren't interested in seeing what you have to say. (I believe i've covered the defriending issue repeatedly in all my comments. you should remember LJ is not real-life)
Yes, this has been covered elsewhere. And this was the point I was trying to make at the time.
What does the "lj is not real life" comment have to do with anything?
The beauty of an lj-cut is that there could actually be anything behind it, and doesn't need to be clearly defined by the actual cut. so in effect it could be even more dangerous to cut things, because people are curious by nature and will look.
That's the most retarded reasoning I've heard all week. If people post stuff uncut, then their friends will see it (or at least, load it) EVERY TIME they refresh their friends list (which for some of us can be a dozen times a day), until it scrolls off the page. If it's cut, and their friends *do* look, then they only look ONCE. They only load the pics ONCE.
Oh, and to take up a point BJ raised and you ignored. there are many ways to restrict the pictures. LJ provide a formatting for this themselves, and most browsers have an option to turn off graphics too.
I assumed that was a reply to Warwick. It certainly didn't relate to anything I said. Hence why I ignored it.

Date: 2004-05-18 05:07 pm (UTC)I wonder if you'll just drop her LJ first, or realise that she does use LJ cut, but not when she wants everyone to look at the pictures.
and no i haven't gone back to look at when she last used lj-cut, or how often she does and doesnt. i just see it as a long post, and plenty of people do that with just text, which is even more anoying, especially when it isnt formatted at all. you cant even pretend to skim read that.
and cos i find multiple threads stupid, i'll deal with your other comment here too.
I don't see it as being inconsiderate, because it's her journal, and the friends add it at their own choice. totally different to smokers forcing their smoke into your airspace. And I'd also not have an issue with anything you post in your journal either. I may not like some of the pics, but i don't care cos it's your journal and i choose to read it.
and warwick, i have issues when people spread it past my screen width also (cant remember the amount! stupid brain)

Date: 2004-05-18 05:25 pm (UTC)I can't be bothered going and checking the number of lj cuts she uses/doesn't use either, but I do know that of the 30 or so people on my friends list (perhaps 20 of which actually post regularly), BJ is the only one I know who does this. I've never felt it necessary to bring up the topic with anyone else (not that I can recall anyway). Although if Wayne was on my friends list I'd probably bring it up with him - I dislike large, unformatted, often uninteresting blocks of text too :P
Regarding the smokers comparison... I didn't mean they're the same on every level, just that they're both examples of people not thinking of others. Please note I'm not siding with inconsiderate smokers - on the contrary, I dislike all examples of people being inconsiderate :P

Date: 2004-05-18 05:34 pm (UTC)I like how you totally ignored my pointing out the difference between passive consideration and active consideration situations.
yes its a consideration issue, but it's one that she really shouldn't have to make. LJ should always be treated as though your reading someone elses regular journal. while the medium is different, and it isn't really designed to be secret, it is still the authors choice on what they put in it, and the readers choice as to what the read.
no subject
Date: 2004-05-18 06:10 pm (UTC)Looking back on your last comment, I can't see anything in there relating to that. Quote me the text and I'll address it...
I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the issue. I can't see either of us being convinced by the other :P
no subject
Date: 2004-05-19 09:24 am (UTC)So I didn't specify it exactly as passive and active consideration, but I at least opened the door for you to think about how they are actually different issues totally, and only vaguelly connected at best.

Date: 2004-05-19 11:57 am (UTC)that is my problem. Viewing BJ's journal can seriously lag the net at times. I understand her wanting to show the world stuff but I wonder if there could have been a half compromise? Show a few and then lj cut the rest. Or do thumbnails, click for larger.
But that is my only gripe and in the end, I just hate the fact that we don't have adsl. Otherwise *shrugs*
