So, what would YOU wear to an interview for a job as "Australian Fauna Keeper" at Perth Zoo?

(no, I haven't had word that I have an interview, mum and I are just trying to figure out what I should wear anyway - we have wildly differing ideas.)

Stilettos, obviously. Lots of chunky gold jewellery. Furs, padded shoulders, gold lame miniskirt, extra long fake fingernails...

With a fox fur stole!! :D
You can say you got it as a result of supporting
fox baiting, damn those ferals!

Hehehe.

Practical? What practical?

One wouldn't stretch very far. Numbat bikini?

Honestly, wear a suit or some sort of business attire. I've always been told that no matter what the interviewer wears, you always want to wear business attire. That is, unless they specifically say wear Tshirt and jeans because you're going to be rolling around in muck as a test ;)

Khakis. Preferably King Gee. And Blundstones. Totally Australian, totally zoo-ish.

I was going to say that! But it's safer to go in well ironed and well presented business attire.

I still believe that for the position of Australian Fauna Keeper (ie, a hands-on, practical, get-your-hands-dirty job) one would wear what the position requires. During the interview process for this particular position, there may be a possibility that the interview could move to an actual animal-containing location. I wouldn't want to do that in full business attire.

Now if the job were Customer Service or something like that, then appropriate attire would mean business attire.

But then, a research phone call to the Zoo might clarify what the position of Fauna Keeper might wear. I'm betting khakis (albeit very new, clean and well ironed khakis) and boots...

How about calling the zoo and asking what is involved in an interview? I thought these places would probably have multiple interviews/hoops that you would have to jump through.

Meh - I research every company I apply to - I would treat the Zoo no differently if I had applied there.

I'd be looking on the website for clues, and I would be ringing the contact they had provided for enquiries (every job I have ever applied for has provided a contact for general information about the job - not applications, but the job itself) - and most places value applicants who have shown initiative and done the research about the environment they might be working in.

Hell, anything that might provide some sort of edge is worth a shot, isn't it?

*nods*

It should be easy to make a simple "Will there be a practical or outdoors component?" call. I'm always impressed when candidates show a bit of initiative. It never hurts.

I have interviewed for FOUR different zoo jobs in the last few months. And received three offers and one second-interview-offer-pending. So I think I am a reliable source of advice. (:

I wore khakis to all of the interviews. Nice khakis, but khakis. Most zoos requrie you to wear khakis if you work there, so it is a subtle way of making yourself look the part they are looking for. I wore no-nonsense shoes. I can't remember if they were my boots (nice, black boots, but boots. Think work boots not fashion boots) or my sturdy square-heeled shoes. Do NOT wear fancy cutesy girlys shoes or shoes with heels. You will not look like you understand the position or can do it. (Certainly not in those shoes!)

For tops, I wore sweaters (it's still cool/cold here), but simple ones. Not nice fancy ones. Think basic colors. Earth tones. Light colors. Nothing loud or bright.

Basically, you want to look clean and presentable without looking to dainty or feminine or fancy to do the job. You want to look like you are able, fit, and can be on your feet for hours. While still looking pleasant and approachable.

Tri-signing.

(Or you could hire a monkeysuit. That'd be kinda cool. They'd certainly remember you. ^_^)

Perhaps you should talk to Possbert (http://possbert.livejournal.com/) as she works at the zoo.

I'm from the old school I guess where, regardless of position, you get dressed in a suit or smart casual at the very least. Pants, shirt with collar - that usually does the trick. When J got the job as body piercer he got it based on the fact he was the only applicant that showed up in suit pants & shirt & tie.

What were other people wearing to their interviews as body piercers?
