At war with the mother
Apr. 14th, 2008 07:05 pmSo, what would YOU wear to an interview for a job as "Australian Fauna Keeper" at Perth Zoo?
(no, I haven't had word that I have an interview, mum and I are just trying to figure out what I should wear anyway - we have wildly differing ideas.)

fox baiting, damn those ferals!
Hehehe.
Practical? What practical?

But then, a research phone call to the Zoo might clarify what the position of Fauna Keeper might wear. I'm betting khakis (albeit very new, clean and well ironed khakis) and boots...

Date: 2008-04-14 12:15 pm (UTC)I'd be looking on the website for clues, and I would be ringing the contact they had provided for enquiries (every job I have ever applied for has provided a contact for general information about the job - not applications, but the job itself) - and most places value applicants who have shown initiative and done the research about the environment they might be working in.
Hell, anything that might provide some sort of edge is worth a shot, isn't it?

Date: 2008-04-14 12:37 pm (UTC)It should be easy to make a simple "Will there be a practical or outdoors component?" call. I'm always impressed when candidates show a bit of initiative. It never hurts.

Date: 2008-04-14 02:23 pm (UTC)I wore khakis to all of the interviews. Nice khakis, but khakis. Most zoos requrie you to wear khakis if you work there, so it is a subtle way of making yourself look the part they are looking for. I wore no-nonsense shoes. I can't remember if they were my boots (nice, black boots, but boots. Think work boots not fashion boots) or my sturdy square-heeled shoes. Do NOT wear fancy cutesy girlys shoes or shoes with heels. You will not look like you understand the position or can do it. (Certainly not in those shoes!)
For tops, I wore sweaters (it's still cool/cold here), but simple ones. Not nice fancy ones. Think basic colors. Earth tones. Light colors. Nothing loud or bright.
Basically, you want to look clean and presentable without looking to dainty or feminine or fancy to do the job. You want to look like you are able, fit, and can be on your feet for hours. While still looking pleasant and approachable.
