Handphone? Now that's just weird. I've never come across any kind of phone that was not operated by or held in your hand.

Yeah, but that's what it's called in Indonesia/Malaysia/etc. Handphone, abbreviated to hp (pronounced "hah-peh"). I wish it would catch on over here, I prefer it. :P

cells are another name for the reception tower things aren't they?

i never got why yanks call them cells. perhaps because when they first came out it was mostly battery cells, gotta love those old brick days

because the network is divided into cells, with the phonecalls handled by the nearest tower, and passed to the next tower if you move.

yes, the tower in control of that "cell" - yes, it makes sense that they are in different cells, but how is that different from the "exchanges" landlines go through?

yes, i understand that difference, I'm making a point that there is no difference between a harwired exchange "cell" and a wireless "cell" in that they are both "cells" and therefore the term "cell phone" for a mobile is even more stupid than most people think.
