When I went to the trade board on the TP, explorer would crash, taking the active desktop and most of the systray with it *grr*.

I rebooted but it's still doing it.

Well I can't give you an English translation, but it directly translates into Zero-Wing:

Probably a virus of some sort considering you have also reported other irregularities about your system recently.

To state the obvious, Run a virus checker. I don't know much really, but apparently there is some sort of virus going around called the bugbear virus. It could be? *shrugs*

I have Norton always running in the background
I often run virus checks manually - especially when my puter does weird shit
I never open sus e-mails

So how I get viruses (if that's what it is I have no idea)

My rule with Windows is if it gives you problems like these, it's time to reformat. How long has it been since you last reformatted/reinstalled?

I prefer not to do things like that, it usually ends up with me losing 99% of my stuff, which is all bad.

And it's awfully time consuming and confusing for a not-so-geek like me.

I doubt it's a virus.

It sounds like whatever program that URLMON.DLL runs is corrupt, deleted, spent, stomped or charred, and is having a pissing contest with windows over memory.

try finding what program uses URLMON.DLL and reinstalling it.

failing that, return to the primordial seas from which you came - computers suck.

You can still get virus's when you have a virus scanner. Especially NORTEN. I have known so many people who have norten as up to date as you can get and still get infected.
I don't think your computer is networked otherwise what I would warn is scan your puter off the network and then the other computer of the network.
Also make sure when your finished with a program uninstall it properally. I would be running a defrag first instead of a reformat / reinstall. I haven't had to do that yet in all the time I've used windows. Normally it's also best to do a scan disk before a defrag.
I have sent Dazz this post page so he can see it and he can reply tonight :)

Well, Firstly, it's NortOn not NortEn :)

And secondly, yes, it is possible to still get viruses even though you are running a scanner. New viruses are written all the time and most virus scanners cannot detect ones they don't know about. The best thing to do is keep the virus scanner signitures up to date. I run a scanner called AVG. There is a free version available on their website at http://www.grisoft.com/. They release updates for it every 2 or 3 days and the updates are free forever.

I got AVG briefly but couldn't make heads or tails of it. It seems the latest problem has gone away for now anyway.

It could be a virus, it it could simply be a problem in IE. What version do you have installed? Try upgrading it to the latest (at least version 6). I'm sure you can find it on a coverCD of a magazine or something.

I have IE6

It seems that the problem is anything Microsoft.

But no, I'm not going to change to linux or unix for reasons that Matt has already explained.

It's good that the problem has gone away but I looked at the problem and went "That looks so much like the stuff I meant to be studying at this moment"

Unfortunatly I can make sense of every single word and 90% of the numbers presented but can't figure out exactly how to fix it (besides the usual update windows / reinstall / run Systemworks)

What's going on is Explorer is referencing the URLMON.dll file (which AFAIK is the bit of IE which interprets all urls) but in the process it has either tried to use a bit of virtual memory belonging to another program or just Windows hasn't allocated it enough virtual memory(which is measured in pages). The numbers and such are debugging information that tells you exactly what your CPU was doing and what the relevant bits of memory at the second the error occoured and probably means zero to anyone who isn't an assembly junkie and a microsoft programmer.

In normal english: Windows has problems, specifically IE and URLMON.dll try updating/replacing either of these or using a program like Symantech Systemworks (part of Norton Utilities) to do a general health check on your system.

but it only crashes on this one page (which is a message board that appears within a frame). Only this one board causes the crash, and it never used to before.

Is that normal??

Date: 2002-11-10 04:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arkem.livejournal.com
It's not entirely normal but can be accounted for either by a change in the page or a change in your software(even a small version change that is done automatically can cause the problem)

The message board probably has some code in it that causes ie to get confused. It could easily related to the fact that the board is part of a frame since frames have slightly different way of being referenced by url (via the frame tags) and this might be why the error happens in the URLMON.dll file.

In short its definately not meant to happen but isn't too bizarre. It is a little odd that its only happening on one page and doesn't always happen but there are so many things that could possibily be going wrong between Windows, IE, URLMON.dll, the message board and the internet it is very hard to pinpoint the cause. My money is on it being Internet Explorer's fault triggered by some wierd code on the message board.

Hopefully it will go away on its own or after an upgrade (of IE or Windows)
