Strange crashings
Nov. 6th, 2002 11:13 amWhen I went to the trade board on the TP, explorer would crash, taking the active desktop and most of the systray with it *grr*.
I rebooted but it's still doing it.
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in

Unfortunatly I can make sense of every single word and 90% of the numbers presented but can't figure out exactly how to fix it (besides the usual update windows / reinstall / run Systemworks)
What's going on is Explorer is referencing the URLMON.dll file (which AFAIK is the bit of IE which interprets all urls) but in the process it has either tried to use a bit of virtual memory belonging to another program or just Windows hasn't allocated it enough virtual memory(which is measured in pages). The numbers and such are debugging information that tells you exactly what your CPU was doing and what the relevant bits of memory at the second the error occoured and probably means zero to anyone who isn't an assembly junkie and a microsoft programmer.
In normal english: Windows has problems, specifically IE and URLMON.dll try updating/replacing either of these or using a program like Symantech Systemworks (part of Norton Utilities) to do a general health check on your system.

Date: 2002-11-10 04:02 am (UTC)The message board probably has some code in it that causes ie to get confused. It could easily related to the fact that the board is part of a frame since frames have slightly different way of being referenced by url (via the frame tags) and this might be why the error happens in the URLMON.dll file.
In short its definately not meant to happen but isn't too bizarre. It is a little odd that its only happening on one page and doesn't always happen but there are so many things that could possibily be going wrong between Windows, IE, URLMON.dll, the message board and the internet it is very hard to pinpoint the cause. My money is on it being Internet Explorer's fault triggered by some wierd code on the message board.
Hopefully it will go away on its own or after an upgrade (of IE or Windows)
