I have this throbbing headache in my left temple, it seems to get worse when I move my head/tense up/grind my teeth a bit. *ugh*

Just took two Tylenol, I usually try to avoid medication but this is nasty so it better work.

Gotta go to library and find books/references. Hopefully I manage to find my way around and the book I need is not out. The library is scary, I much prefer the net.

Group meeting about dinosaur presentation. I actually have quite a bit of stuff to talk about now. Hepatic pistons and gastralia and stuff, I just wanna know if there is a correlation between breathing strategies and whether the dinosaur is saurischian or ornithischian, because it seems to be linked to the pelvic shape.

Yeah yeah, I know that made no sense to anyone else.

Lab, rat oestrus, we hafta take vaginal smears from rats and inject them with hormones!! Hrm, not sure about that. It will be a learning experience I guess, but I'm not sure if I like the idea of molesting rats.

Want the Aussie dollar to plummet just for a day so I can cash my USD, then it can get straight back up again so I can spend my AUD. :)

Demand for the day - http://members.ebay.com.au/aboutme/gemfyre/ - bid on my shit, I need money. I also need a digicam so I can sell more crap. Yay for eBay. Soon I will be at 100 feedback, oooerr. I have over 100 feedbacks in total, but lots are from the same people so the doubles don't count. :(

Rats...

saurischian = lizard-like

ornithischian = bird-like

Dinosaurs could be split either into bird-hipped or lizard-hipped dinosaurs, depending on the shape of the hip bone (which corelates to the wish bone in a chicken, I think)

Hepatic pistons refers to the liver in some way, and I know gastralia has something to do with the ribcage.

Not sure what that has to do with breathing though.

I had a childhood obsession with dinosaurs...does it show :)

ooh very impressive. I also had the childhood obsession, but I was more into the different species, not really how they worked, tho I was familiar with the hip structures.

The wishbone is the clavicle (shoulders), not the hips. ;)

And yep, gastralia are the set of ribs below the belly (there is great example of these in one of skeletons at the museum). Now, apparently due to the moveable hip bones and gastralia, dinosaurs managed this thingo where the liver is pulled back and pushed into the lungs, therefore changing the pressure and allowing the whole breathing thing to happen. I assume it works by the hips moving back and the liver being dragged with it and the gastralia lowering to increase the lungs, then it all squeezing back again to push the air out.

Well, not being very knowledgeable in this field of study, I have a question too which may or may not be helpful to you:
The bone structure of these particular dinosaurs may affects their breathing. There has been speculation as to why humans can't fly, and it was said that for a human to be able to fly, they would have to have the thorax of a bird's to support the wing structure. Apparently, a human's body could not support this kind of bone structure as it would affect the breathing somehow (and it would look bloody stupid). Is there any correlation between this and the type of species of dinosaur you are trying to work out, in relation to the pelvic shape, and/or whether it is a saurischian or a ornithischian? Also, being that you can distinguish between a male and female human (no doubt other species of animal too) because of the size and shape of the pelvic bone, is there any reason to find a similarity between the size/shape of a dinosaur's pelvic bone?

Oh well, I was just wondering. As I said, I don't know much about this kind of stuff so please excuse the clumsiness of terms. It was just a thought, I hope you can answer it somehow...

apparently the dinosaur breathing is to do with the hip bones not being fused (as in mammals) so it can rock and other stuff can move.

As for flying. Birds have a keel on their breastbone to anchor muscles and coracoid bones - extra bracing across the shoulders. Without those bones the chest cavity would pretty much collapse when the powerful flight muscles are used :)

So now ya know.
