Here in Australia they used to the do the "U-cut" which was great, everything fit in the cut and it didn't fall out as you ate it. I was amazed with Subway because they cut their rolls in a way that the filling stayed in.

Then, apparently due to "market research", they decided that the "hinge cut" was preferred by customers. The hinge cut is the cut everywhere else does, just cut the roll in half.

NO-ONE I know prefers the hinge cut. And more and more Subway sandwich artists don't know how to do a U-cut when I request it, which is sad sad thing, it's like losing a cultural phenomenon. So half the time I have to deal with a crappy hinge cut anyway.

Stuff doesn't fit properly, the rolls are made upside down because the salad goes on one side and the meat on the other and the sauce gets mixed together wrong. Alot of sandwich artists don't seem to understand when I ask for the mayonaise to be put on the roll before the salad so it doesn't get mixed with the sauce I put on the meat. It's a petty gripe of mine but I hate the sauces all mixed up and stuff. Doing the meat on one side and salad on the other then trying to squish it all together so it fits in the crappy cut is just demented in my opinion.

And then of course there's the ones who attempt a U-cut and screw it up badly, I just wanna say "gimme the knife and I'll do it!". And when we finally get a proper U-cut half of them try to fill it the demented hinge cut way and try and squeeze the meat in one side and the salad down the other. The idea of the (beautiful beautiful) U-cut is that you stick the cheese and meat in the bottom, stick the meat sauce on, pile the salad on that, put the salad sauce on, the plonk the top of the roll on top!! Is that so hard for them to get their heads around!!

ARGH!!

I never was much of a Subway eater until lately, but now that you mentioned it, I do remember they used to do the "U Cut"! Maybe I will mention it to the very out-of-it Subway guy next time I'm in just to see the blank look on his face :)

I miss the U-cut too :( I really dislike messy food, and hate it that everytime I eat a sub now half the filling falls out.

Stupid bloody market reserch.....

They have even gotten rid of my all time favourite sub, the satay chicken with cheese!

Bastards!

I would boycott them except for the fact that I'm addicted to their bloody choc chip bickies!

*humph!*

It's healthy

Ah, I knew we had something in common.

I have much the same angst as you, and I mourned the loss of the U-cut. However, the Subway Sandwich Artists that I've dealt with (mostly in the Leederville Subway) are more than happy to make sandwiches the way I like them, and one of them at least recognises me and automatically asks "U-cut?" when I order.

Some know it, some don't.

I find the guys at Dog Swamp are great and know how to do it. However the guys at Inaloo are clueless *bangs head on desk*.

yeah, I preferred the U cut.

and I remember when they changed it--I was pissed too. They said "we'll do a U cut if you want, just ask", but it was obviously a transition thing--no way they were onna teach it to the new employees... and Subway ain't exactly a lifetime career option, is it?

I'm lucky--I don't like any of their salads, so my sub is so empty that nopthing falls out, anyway. (they should get carrot. I love carrot.)

in Adelaide you can get pineapple!!

And they should have red or yellow capsicum, green capsicum is gross, but it's half the price, hence why they only have that I guess.

I guess for you it's like Russian Roulette ... everytime you buy a sandwich, it's the luck of the draw as to whether you get someone cluey, or clueless.
