Here in Australia they used to the do the "U-cut" which was great, everything fit in the cut and it didn't fall out as you ate it. I was amazed with Subway because they cut their rolls in a way that the filling stayed in.

Then, apparently due to "market research", they decided that the "hinge cut" was preferred by customers. The hinge cut is the cut everywhere else does, just cut the roll in half.

NO-ONE I know prefers the hinge cut. And more and more Subway sandwich artists don't know how to do a U-cut when I request it, which is sad sad thing, it's like losing a cultural phenomenon. So half the time I have to deal with a crappy hinge cut anyway.

Stuff doesn't fit properly, the rolls are made upside down because the salad goes on one side and the meat on the other and the sauce gets mixed together wrong. Alot of sandwich artists don't seem to understand when I ask for the mayonaise to be put on the roll before the salad so it doesn't get mixed with the sauce I put on the meat. It's a petty gripe of mine but I hate the sauces all mixed up and stuff. Doing the meat on one side and salad on the other then trying to squish it all together so it fits in the crappy cut is just demented in my opinion.

And then of course there's the ones who attempt a U-cut and screw it up badly, I just wanna say "gimme the knife and I'll do it!". And when we finally get a proper U-cut half of them try to fill it the demented hinge cut way and try and squeeze the meat in one side and the salad down the other. The idea of the (beautiful beautiful) U-cut is that you stick the cheese and meat in the bottom, stick the meat sauce on, pile the salad on that, put the salad sauce on, the plonk the top of the roll on top!! Is that so hard for them to get their heads around!!

ARGH!!
