I finally bought me some coloured pencils. Derwents were a bit out of my price range so I got Crayola, which are decent quality and not too expensive.

Now, even tho my mind is full of ideas alas I cannot draw. :( I can however make patterns. So I drew and coloured this.

ooh trippy

I chose a colour and started colouring a shape at random. If I'd realised I was on the big shape when I chose red I would have done it a different colour, but oh well. And the blue and purple down the bottom are too close in shade and all the pencil strokes show up.

Still, it looks neat, I think I might stick it on my file, or make wallpaper out of it or something.

Any art critics??

There is something similar to that process called an "automatic drawing", where you take to a blank canvas, or piece of paper, and just squiggle your pencil about in all directions. When you are satisfied you have done that enough, you look at the lines for a while and try to make out a picture within those lines. Then you colour in that imagined space with whatever medium you desire. Sometimes it looks like a glass lead-light design, or some sort of Picasso, it really is an interesting procedure...

That pic is really good, The colours are fine. There is a good placement of colours, and the pale blue on the periphery makes a great frame, suitable for the organic lines contained. That little bit of dark green is interesting, as it draws the eye to that particular spot, and there is a good use of contrasting colours (eg)the yellow with the pink, and the lime green with the orange in the corner.

Have you tried using Aquarelles, the water colour pencils? They draw like normal pencils, but have the added bonus of being a watercolour, so you can blend the colours, and have almost seamless pencil strokes. However, it is not recommended to use them on normal paper, as it will warp, so thicker gsm paper like Jackson's Watercolour (a cheaper version is Olympic) is best.

I have a set of Derwent's, but I like my Prismacolors better (which can be like $100 for the whole set, ouch). But I like the style of your picture. Just need to color it in darker so that the lines really pop out, find a frame (you can always pick up cheap frames at garage sales/fleamarkets), and slap it on your wall and you have an original piece of art!
