I should just give up on wearing beaded necklaces. Whether I make them myself or cough up $20+ for them, they always break eventually. The hematite necklace I bought last June just gave up the ghost (the one I bought in November was broken by December). I think I've managed to rescue most of the beads.

I need a silver chain and a nice, sturdy pendant (I've had many pendants either come off or wear through). That shouldn't break on me.

Feels weird not having a necklace on.

I share your dilemma :) I have replaced my sterling silver chains every year for the past twelve years (sometimes sooner) - since there is some chemical (which makes it impossible for me to wear any gold. I break out in a rash and itch like mad) in my skin oils/perspiration that makes them weaken and break (usually turning over in bed). And since I like my chain to be a small box chain (thus irreparable when they break), and longer than average (I prefer 60cm or longer. The average is 50cm, 55cm is less common, but readily available), they are difficult to come by, and are frightfully expensive (since silver is freakishly cheap) when I find them. But I have three silver pendants that I simply *must* wear - I feel naked and alone without them :/

So it's not a given that a silver chain will be any more sturdy...I wish you luck! :)

I have worn a silver chain for years at a time in the past with no issue. I should have that chain around somewhere but so far haven't been able to find it. :(

Do you take it off to go to bed? Honestly, sleeping is very hard on necklaces, especially if your hair is shoulder length or longer.
I take off all my jewelry before going to sleep. The damages to the jewelry and my body just aren't worth it... LOL

I was wearing it 24/7. The bloody thing was strung on fishing line.

It came apart while I was driving though.

Hair kills nylon line. Heck, it kills tigertail or even the 49 strand twisted wire!
The line is probably getting weakened by the abuse it gets while you sleep, and then finally breaks at random times.

Where are they breaking? at the clasp or is it random? Restringing isnt too hard. I can probably find a tutorial for you.

I'd offer to fix them for you, but the shipping would kill us!

They all seem to be strung on fishing line which just snaps at random spots.

I have all the gear for restringing. :) The problem is I'm often missing a few beads after a breakage and my restringing effort usually snaps eventually too.

I think it's time I invest in good silver again.

Tigertail can be good too. It's similar to fishing line but with a metal core (I'm assuming I'm telling you things you already know, since you are/were into beading, but oh well... I'll say it anyway!)

Yeah, I usually use tigertail, it's also handy because you can crimp it and don't have to worry about fiddly knots. The only problem is when it bends, it won't unbend so you end up with funny kinks in the necklace.

I've heard someone suggest using fishing line that's designed for reeling in very heavy fish (I think it's call 30 pound fishing line because that's the weight it'll take).

All Scott's workmates are crazy fans for fishing. It's surreal!!
