Apparently a lot of areas are cordoned off an designated as crime scenes.

While I totally agree that the bastards who started this should be caught and drawn and quartered and burned at the stake and all, marking it as a crime scene means no-one but emergency services (for humans) can get in.

This means no wildlife rescue groups can get in. No vets can get in. The few days the area will be cordoned off is too long for the wildlife and livestock struggling in the aftermath. The death toll for them will rise astronomically. :(

I'm on the other side of the country (but we are having our fair share of fires here). But there are friends and family all over the country, and just the magnitude, it's affecting everyone in the country somehow I think.

You wonder what the probability of them even finding the person/s responsible is...

yeah, I wonder how they find out anything when all the evidence is a charred wreck.

You'd be surprised what's still left at the seat of the fire. If the wind moves it on straight away (and doesn't turn around) the original site might only be scorched.

I know during the NSW fires back in the mid-90's fire fighters carried soft material bags during mop-up operations and placed any small injured animals in them to take back to wildlife carers who were not able access the sites at the time. Hopefully something like this is also in place in Victoria.
