So, Dark Knight got quite a few nominations. I'm stunned that Tropic Thunder got nominations (one for best supporting actor no less). I didn't see the movie, but that was because it looked so damn pathetic the in the previews. To me it's like nominating Biodome for an Oscar.

Anyway. Dark Knight got nominations for...

1. Performance by an actor in a supporting role
For our Heath of course. I haven't seen any of the other movies but I think Heath is deserving. Let's just hope to god Tropic Thunder doesn't get it.

2. Achievement in art direction
Not really sure what that entails.

3. Achievement in cinematography
Again, not really sure what this entails.

Achievement in costume design
TDK should have a nomination for this but it doesn't. C'mon, the hexagon shirt! The socks! Even the batsuit and Harvey's half-scorched suit. They deserve a nomination dammit.

4. Achievement in film editing
What, for creating great plot holes? This is kinda laughable. They should swap out this nom for the costume design one.

5. Achievement in makeup
This is one I think TDK totally should win. The Joker's makeup was pretty damn good and OMG the Two-Face getup was brilliant and nightmare inducing and deserves an Oscar on it's own. Whether Heath wins or not doesn't bother me. But it would be a travesty for TDK not to get this one.

6. Achievement in sound editing
7. Achievement in sound mixing
Not sure what the difference between these two is. But I find it amazing how effective 2 discordant notes were. As soon as you heard that distinct buzz/whine the tension began to ratchet up. Brilliant.

8. Achievement in visual effects
So they filmed stuff in IMAX. And they really DID flip that truck. Awesome.

That's EIGHT noms! That's pretty damn impressive. Especially for a comic book movie.

Achievement in art direction

I think this is the sets and props.

Achievement in cinematography

Filming 'n stuff.

I also think sound mixing refers to sound effects, which is seperate from making sure everything else sounds right.

The art director is a keynote person in charge of administrating finances to prop, set, and other artistic departments (sometimes including costumes); and also delegates, and makes sure everyone is working properly. It's a good nomination to get.

The sound editor is the person in charge of getting all the music assembled and ready for sound mixing. They collate it all together, depending on how many different tracks are needed, and send it off the sound mixing dept. The person (or department) in charge of sound mixing makes sure all the volumes don't clash with dialogue, or other sound effects. They make sure the music cues with the action properly, and essentially make the music do its job. The show 30 Rock currently has an awful awful sound mixing department. The music is way too loud in contrast with dialogue.

Cinematography is huge, that's the overall look of the film. Which angles to choose for what reasons. The whole reason TDK has such a dark, claustrophobic, angular feel is entirely due to cinematography and the angles chosen by the director of cinematography. They have more to do with camera angles, shots and delegating what camera crews should be doing what; than the director who is often more concerned with the actors / stunt people etc.

Hope that helps some!

I'm quite divided with cinematography nomination because the wide angle/exterior shots were brilliant but all of the close-up and people shots were mediocre to downright horribly out of proportion. I say give them the visual effects & especially the sound awards though.

I think it should have been up for Best Picture. That or Wall-E instead of The Reader. It has a good shot in the technical categories, but I think Benjamin Button has a real shot at taking the makeup and visual effects from it, though.

Tropic Thunder was really good and I would be happy if Downey won it. I'd be just as happy if Heath won, though, too. Either of those guys would be good with me.
