At this moment in time, I can't afford to earn a measly $26,000 per year. They pay this pittance to employees, yet require qualifications (I've applied/interviewed there previously and didn't get through - and I had my degree back then and a bunch of volly work under my belt). I can earn that much being a checkout chick. I'd really like more than the $35,000 I'm getting now.

I wish the zoo would call me. "Yeah, we've had someone leave and you're next in line, want an interview??" At least the zoo pays properly.

Oh, and ads for rental properties should HAVE to have whether or not they allow pets. Have already wasted a couple of hours going to see houses and then finding they don't allow pets. Bah. But they'll allow a 2 year old human, which is a lot more destructive and messy than my girls.

we found that about rentals too. we'd specifically ask about pets and they'd reply with the home open time and we'd go and apply and be told no pets.

Wow, 26k? That is awfully low. Poverty line low, wtf? (If I work full time next year, I'll be on twice that. Hey, do a 1 yr DipEd and you could be earning 50k+ afterwards. They'll probably even throw scholarship money at you because there's always a shortage in the science area. Of course there's that annoying problem of massive workload and dealing with kids' behaviour issues, but you get used to that. Or else you stop noticing, maybe.)

I hear you on the pets thing. When we were looking it was always the first thing I asked when I called to see a place--a phone call can save you a wasted trip, at least. Also worth emphasising that you have cats--some owners/agents are fine with cats but not dogs, since cats are much cleaner. Worth asking, anyway.

But they can't disallow cute little baby humans! That'd be discrimination, don'tcha know

That's 50K before tax, btw. After it's closer to $35k. But still better than $26K before tax. :(

$26K is nasty low for a full time graduate position :-(

And it wouldn't hurt for agents to tell you about the pet thing before you turned up. When buying I once specified double car port and no pedestrian access and got sent to all sorts of inappropriate places.

I dunno, I ring and the first thing I ask is about pets. Some RE Agents have a no pets policy but the rental market is slackening so you might get 'we don't usually allow pets but apply anyway and see how you go.'

If you can get a written reference for the cats, or if your current landlord is willing to provide a reference for the cats it helps.

$26,000 is low for the current cost of living. I'm sure we've all lived on less but at the moment it's a little bit ridiculous. Is there anything going at DEC at the moment? That's where I'd be looking.

Yeah I'm looking at DEC at least weekly, and now have a friend sending me internal jobs.

I have an MR licence. Wouldn't be much effort to get an HR (seeing as my dad trains truckies). One year and I could earn a packet.

That's full time. Or at least, it's what everyone there earns apparently, no matter how much they work.

Honestly I wonder how they manage to get any employees.
