So, I'll find out by Sunday night whether I do or don't have a job at Caversham.

Of course, there is a catch. The pay is almost 10k per year less than what I'm earning now. Is it worth it?

Pros
- job in my field.
- probably less stress because it's what I want to do.
- slightly shorter hours.
- exercise at work.
- I was earning much less while we were in Beechboro and was still pretty happy/comfortable.

Cons
- rolling roster - every 3rd weekend or so off (but still 5 days a week). This isn't that much of an issue. Having to work on Christmas and Easter and stuff is.
- we're trying to save for a house. A paycut doesn't help with that. There is potential for payrises in the future, but as the girl that interviewed me said herself, "nothing to get excited about".

Rentals slightly further east (we're looking about halfway between Matt's work and Caversham) are cheaper/more bang for your back. Rentals in the area we are now are sought after, poky and high-end prices.

Gosh the prospect of not doing the job I'm currently doing anymore excites me. But the paycut stings a bit.

I took a more than $30,000 a year pay cut, AND lost benefits, AND lost retirement, AND don't even have a permanent position.

But I work at a zoo. I love it. I am so much happier. I'm doing what I love and have always dreamed. I wouldn't go back to my old job for a million dollars.

It would be a further foot in the door as well.

Take the job if you get offered it. You will be able to progress in the field as you have qualifications and it is something you are passionate about. If you stay doing clerical type stuff you will probably have to requalify to get promotions/payrises. A paycut now may mean better career progression in the future. (note this is the exact opposite of what I chose to do a few years ago)

don't see it as 10k to start with, look at the after tax what would it be.

Assuming it drops down then to something between 6-7k, split that 7k over 52 weeks.

Around $135 a week.

Now, factor in the difference in rentals for similar size property. I was having a wander around the internet and assuming you're still in the house I remember, you're looking at around $100 a week difference in rentals for the area.

not a bad choice, i'd say

I've taken a substantial paycut in the past in order to do something I was more interested in and have a better quality of life. I didn't regret it at all.

It's your life and all, but I've never ever regretted choosing quality of working life over dollars. There's nothing like waking up and *wanting* to go to work.

I feel the same way. But buying houses and having to find a new rental just before prices drop costs money unfortunately. :(

I work three days a week at awesome job and the rest day to day teaching supply. I could earn more full time teaching or even full time supply (or even 3 day a week supply) or in a government whore job...

At the end of the day I still love being at awesome job. It doesn't feel like work at all. As a wise man once said, "If you love what you do you never work a day in your life."

If you can live ok on the pay cut and it something you'll love, I say go for it.

I wrote that before I saw the $26K part. That does make it much more difficult :-(

May I ask what your awesome job is?

I work for an animal charity in their education department. Basically I get paid to teach people how and why to be kind to animals. Humane education is a tiny field, but it's really where I want to be career wise right now.

And I'm not going ot mention the name of my employer on lj- sorry!
