AFL is REAL football. And only Aussies and a few crazy Irishmen are stupid enough to play that.

(And I would also like to ask why Americans don't do cricket either).

Actually, they play Aussie Rules in Canada too. Probably other places as well but I don't know off the top of my head.

I think soccer never took of in the US because Americans like instant gratification and something to cheer about, and because scoring is so rare in soccer compared to other sports, it doesn't give them what they want.

I had the theory that due to the lack of scoring is why people kill each other over soccer. No other mainstream sport seems to incite such violence.

Totally agreed about riots etc, that's what I thought too - everyone's just frustrated. I think that Americans don't like cricket because A) - it takes time to understand the complexities and subtleties of the game & B) instant gratification... :)

the thing thats annoying about soccer is that 80% of what makes it interesting is the crowds, you know the songs they sing, the weapons they bring. other than that it is a very dull game.

Aussie rules is played in the US and in some African nations too, mainly because as a game it is interesting to watch, totally unlike soccer

Hockey is like that. Although, they have all-out brawls too, so maybe that's a bad example.

football is played mianly with the feet, hence the name 'foot'ball - the clue is in the name.

that means 'real' football has to be the english version, as we seem to be the only ones to understand this concept.

afl is for nutters, but still very entertaining :o)
