Fucking Orang Utan!

gemfyreMatt and I should attend more quiz nights (even the ones held during daylight hours), because 90% of the time, the table we're on ends up winning. It's one of those rare things that I'm actually really good at.
One thing that shat me was that I could not remember what Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii were. Immediately I said, "Chimpanzee & bonobo", but then was like, "No, that's Pan troglodytes". Then I spent the rest of the round racking my brains trying to remember what it was. Eventually we all settled on Hippopotamus, because they come in pygmy size and regular. Although something told me that was wrong, wasn't Hippopotamus a Latin name in itself? (Turns out it is). And something kept telling me it was a monkey, but I was only going through large African animals for some reason.
When they read the answer it was immediate "bang head on desk" for me. No wonder I thought chimps right off the bat, I was on the right track with great apes.

I felt extra bad because when I helped organise a Mars quiz night many years back I wrote the table quiz - which was a list of Latin names requesting common names - I did put Gorilla on it as an obvious one and I think a few tables still got it wrong!
