I'd like to shoot the geniuses who thought releasing rainbows in Perth was a good idea, and those who continued to ignore the growing problem until now when it's out of hand, because it didn't previously affect human resources.
Rainbow lorikeets are feral in South-west Australia. They're gradually moving further and further afield, pushing out native and endemic parrots as they go. They're aggressive, noisy and messy.
And only now that they're threatening grape crops have the authorities finally decided it's a pest, now it's too late.
The same thing is happening in NZ. And they already have feral rabbits and possums from us... so many possums that they are squashed on the road everywhere.
Maybe someone should start selling them as a gourmet meal and allow open slather hunting of them? That would dent their populations I'm sure.
