And as if the cold wasn't bad enough
May. 18th, 2007 06:51 amEveryone around here has log fires.
Even though the house is closed up the place still smells like a bushfire.
Ack.

Date: 2007-05-18 04:35 am (UTC)Our stupid twat neighbours with the log fires had theirs lit at 2pm the other day - and it was 29C (85F for anyone not in Oz/on metric) for goodness' sake! The one day of the whole week I had a chance to get my washing on the line and it came in smelling of burned refuse (they use their fire as a garbage bin, and the smell of burning rubbish is rank, to say the least). And my asthma really doesn't appreciate the smoke...
It seems the first hint of Autumn (not even Winter!) and anyone with a log fire thinks it gives them license to blanket the neighbourhood with their rancid smoke.
We get bushfire smoke almost all summer long, and then, just as the weather cools down enough to send the bushfires packing, we get smoke from the neighbours, and then, in the dead of winter, we get the added bonus of the prescribed burns by CALM. Ugh, it gets cool enough to open the windows and let some fresh air in, and we can't, because the air is filled with smoke.
Log fires should be banned in residential areas. Farms - sure, fine, whatever. But not in the suburbs of a capital city/regional towns or anywhere where the neighbours can be swamped by the smoke. Ugh.

Date: 2007-05-18 08:26 am (UTC)It actually IS bloody freezing down here (not 29, that's lovely weather, having a heater on in that is just plain brainless), and all the houses are old so log fires are the default. It's just unpleasant. :(
Also, it seems the old tradition of burning your rubbish in the backyard hasn't died out here. I wanted to do my washing a while back and couldn't because the guys over the fence had a backyard fire going all day. Gah!
