A wife-beater is a singlet! I always thought they were a jumper of some sort. You learn something everyday. I learned this from the director commentary for Strictly Ballroom.

And we use "tank top" instead of "singlet" here in the States.

Apparently, we get to blame A Streetcar Named Desire and Raging Bull for the term wifebeater.

Ah, see, to me a tank top is different. Singlets are a ribbed, stretchy fabric and intended as an undergarment. Tank tops are generally cotton or something similar and can be any colour and often feature some design on them, and are worn as an outer garment.

That's pretty much the difference I see as well.
I find it very weird that the singlet is referred to as a wife beater ,I never heard of that before , I wonder who came up with that ?

And I grew up with English parents who called it a "vest". Ah, language confusion. My partner used to wear them all the time--he calls them WBs for short though.

lol well I've always thought a singlet was wrestling attire? When my daughter was wrestling she wore a "singlet". It's like a leotard, but the top half is like a tank top and the bottom is like bicycle shorts. Only it's one piece and made from spandex.
