The shower

Turn on hot water.
Wait for hot water to come through.
Adjust cold water so it's tolerable.
Step into shower.
Water starts getting scorching hot.
Adjust cold water to suit.
Water starts getting scorching hot.
Adjust cold water to suit.
Find perfect temperature.
Notice water temperature rapidly decline until it feels like only the cold tap is on.
Turn off cold tap.
Wait for hot water to slowly return.
Water gets scorching.
Adjust cold water appropriately.
Water gets scorching.
Adjust cold water.
Find perfect temperature.
Temperature suddenly drops until it feels like only the cold tap is on.
Turn off cold tap.

Repeat until end of shower. Gah.

Yup, that sounds failiar. My Mum's house was like that.

And if was winter and you forgot to turn the booster on... no hot water for you!

At least this place has the instant hot water system going for it. but it costs more in power bills, boo.

Assuming you have gas, try fiddling with the controls. Most relatively modern hot water heaters have knobs that allow you to control the rate of hot water production, and your settings may be screwy.
