Lil has a corneal ulcer. Somehow she got a scratch on her eye. The cornea is kinda folded up in an area which is hindering it's healing process.

It'll cost around $200 to put her under for an op to remove the fold so it can heal properly. Right now money is tight due to my moving but I can borrow from mum & dad and pay it back once I start work, it's not really a matter of cost. Time is a bit short, I'm wanting to move within the next fortnight, if I get it done within the next few days she'll have a week or so to recover.

At least while she's under I can also get her teeth cleaned and claws trimmed if it's not too expensive.

She also has skin cancer on her nose, which I suspected. I'm not sure if much can really be done about that. I'll just have to be more dilligent about putting sunscreen on her, even though she washes it straight off. At least lately - I imagine because of her eye - she's spending most of the time inside sleeping.

Bella is fit and healthy and just a smidge tubby. She's also daft. :)

What choice do you have? You can't just neglect them, like you wouldn't neglect a human child. Money is no issue in these cases, you find it somehow. The $700 in my Paypal account is finally coming in handy.

I wish my mother had your attitude. I can't tell you how many pets I had to watch die from things like parvo or less serious, treatable diseases because my mom wouldn't even TRY to find a way to get them treated. Even if we could afford it, she didn't want to spend the money.

I probably could have called animal control back then, but it was too late by the time I realized for any of the poor animals. Mom tends to see them as mere playthings, SAYING she loves them but only giving them the bare necessities and then saying it's enough. The parakeet she has now is in a tiny cage and I told her I bet Baby (the keet) would love a bigger cage to fool around in, but she merely goes "It's big enough for a bird her size", as in it's just big enough to be liveable. I, of course, tend to do the opposite and have spent around 150 dollars to get a big cage for my finches.

Whoops, sorry to rant at you, it's just your last paragraph brought back some memories. I admire you for doing what a lot of people apparently wouldn't, and I hope things work out for the best for you and your kitty!

Aww...poor Lil. I hope her eye heals. That sounds painful.

I agree with the money thing. I take better care of my cats than I do myself. I don't think twice about the sudden $200 vet bill for my girls, but have been mulling over new sunglasses for driving (prescription) since I found out I was getting insurance again.

Poor Lil -- I Googled "cat sunscreen" and got this stuff called Petscreen that says it's lick-resistant, but I'm not sure if they sell it in AU.

You're a very good kittymommy for being so vigilant about your pets' health. I wish more people were like you.

Yeah, tis alright when it's a few hundred bucks here and there and that the disease is diagnosable and treatable.

It's probably a little bit too late for Lil cos she's too old (they wont cover an animal if it's over 9 years of age), but you might consider getting kitty health insurance for Bella. That way if something ever happens to her you're pretty much covered for the cost of the vet.
