Transperth apparently has ads featuring a gorilla with a fez. Middle Eastern groups are offended by this. "Why did they chose that particular hat? Why not a cap? Or a slouch hat? Why does it have a hat at all? It MUST be a having a go at us poor Middle Easterners again."

No, a fez is just FUNNY. Ask Matt Groening. Get over yourselves.

And apparently the pope says something about Islam leading to violence. Islams respond by torching churches and burning effigies of the pope and demanding a personal apology, thus proving him right. Absolutely, Christianity/Catholocism also leads to much violence, as does pretty much every religion, but it doesn't make what he's said any less true. He aplogised anyway, stupid diplomacy. If you say something, mean it and don't relent as soon as someone complains, or just don't say it in the first place.

What the pope said was that the prophet muhammed had brought nothing but evil to the world. I think that *is* a bit harsh, despite their violent reaction.

If you read the speech though, the Pope is quoting that, which was said 700yrs ago, to make a point, the point is that volience has no place in faith or the soul.

I think the media have taken one line, out of context with the rest of the speech and made something big. Thats one line out of 8 pages of text, its not all about how evil islam is, its not about that at all..

I didn't actually read the speech, just caught a bit of it on the news. Definitely not the most reliable source, but then none of them seem to be... ah well. I'm probably far too naturally defensive of muslims.

Amusing, we just talked about the whole pope-matter today and both heartily agreed. "We will proof we're not evil and violent, and we'll beat you and shoot you untill you believe". Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
