Guess what I forgot to take to the bird walk today?

My binoculars. Of all things. Luckily for me someone had a spare pair and lent me them so the day wasn't a complete loss.

It was lovely to see Western Rosellas again and to get such good views of White-breasted Robins.

And later Maree, Conrad and I headed down to the main resevoir (Bickley Brook) and I got great views of a MALE Western Spinebill! Yay!! I have finally seen one in all his finery. Happy B.J.

Looks as if I might need to take a trip to Bickly Brook!

It was 20 years ago, when Male and Female Western Spinebills were common down here in Calista/Kwinana. They certainly are a beautifull bird, such wonderful colours.

New land and houses were still being built in the area and many thought that planting Australian trees and shrubs would encourage the birds. However they were not native to Western Australia. So eventually the day came when the New Holland Honeyeaters decided to stay in the area, rather than move on as they usually did. Being very territorial and quite aggressive, the Spinebills, Rufous Whistlers, Western Robins and Pardelots were soon chased away from the area.

So it is many years since I have seen these beautiful birds.
