"RU486 will kill Australian mothers"
No, RU486 will possibly kill women who took it to prevent becoming a mother (of that particular child). They may or may not already be mothers.
"This debate isn't about abortion."
Aspirin and Paracetamol will possibly kill Australian mothers too, and there's no hoo-hah about that. Why? Because the debate damn well IS about abortion. I can handle it being about abortion, the debate has raged for many many years and will continue because there will always be pro-lifers and pro-choicers. Denying the fact is what pisses me off.
I hope I never have to, or want to use this drug. But if the situation ever arises I would like to have the informed choice.

Date: 2006-02-08 10:16 pm (UTC)Though you know reading through the media for the last year I feel that there is some concern...it's as if a small but rather vocal section of our country are hell bent on pushing the abortion issue in Australia back to where it was after WWII. That's not a nice thought. RU486 isn't perfect, nothing is that's just the way things are but some how I'd rather women have access to that than be driven to do all sorts of other things in sheer desperation. Of course if the goverment spent more money on Medicare that would be a much bigger step in the right direction.

Date: 2006-02-09 01:34 am (UTC)I have no idea what the stats are like for pro-choicers, but I'm under the impressions considering the rabidity of both sides, that not too many of the pro-choicers have ever been pregnant.

Date: 2006-02-09 04:48 am (UTC)Hanging around in those sorts of communities, I've found that most pro-choicers that have chosen abortion are relieved. Always remember - pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion, it means pro-choice. :)
Many (including yourself) choose to have an unplanned bub and love it dearly, and that is awesome too.
I don't think I could go through because I'd feel like I was losing a part of me, but many don't feel that, so they should have the option.
