I’m starting to reorder my priorities a bit.

I’ve always been memory focussed and therefore a packrat. I must surround myself with items that remind me of things. Which of course means I’m weighed down by loads of material possessions that I don’t want to part with.

A great example of this is my My Little Pony collection. It reminds me of great times from both my childhood and later years. But sometimes, especially now, I think of it and realise, they’re just hunks of pretty plastic sitting in boxes. I do intend to display them sometime, but even then, it’s just plastic collecting dust.

Birdwatching however. Birding gives me the perfect excuse to travel all the places I want to go. I’m always birding and it has benefits for me and the environment. To bird all I need are a good set of optics, a field guide, a good pair of boots and the desire to see birds. It’s made itself part of my career path and is a reflex to me now. This collection does not sit in cabinets looking fancy. It flies wild on many coloured wings.

To optimise my birding experience I need a good set of optics that will cost a load but set me up for life. And here I am sitting on the asset of these plastic ponies. When I get home I’ll look at them and think I never want to part with them. But being logical, I could let go of a large majority of them to raise money for my birding pursuits.

I think I need to move on and let go of a lot of my material possessions that are weighing me down. Transform them into a set of Leica Ultravids or Swarovski ELs, get in the car and drive and bird and have the time of my life.

I haven’t made any hard and fast decision now. But the prospect excites me. The sooner I can start birding to full effectiveness the better. This is a lifetime thing for me now, I’ll never cease doing it, unless birds cease to be. And to do it I cannot sit in a house, surrounded by material things, just because they remind me of things. Music and photos take up a lot less space and also remind me. I should let go and just go for it.

take photos of all of the ponies you have and make a montage of them or something - then sell them :)

oh i'm sure that she'll make sure she has something to remember them and show from them.

And I mightn't have to worry about having an entire room in the house taken up by little bits of plastic... :)

I feel the same way. I used to tell myself 'oh the bean will like and play with these' but in truth there's to many for her to play with and enjoy. Plus she likes the new ones better. I started dismantling my pony room a few weeks back. Baggied up and put all of them away except for a few shelves of favorites. Prices are kind of crap right now, and I'm in no hurry to sell them all, just enough to make room. My crap has to much control over my life and space and it shouldn't be that way.

Should you decide to sell them, might I have a crack at them? They'd be going to a good home, trust me.
