When I was 7 we camped at DeGrey river (on the way back from Broome) and the older kids told me the holes nearby were King Brown holes. I was thusly terrified and refused to get up all night, despite the fact that I was busting for a pee. I now know King Browns do not live in holes, but I still never thought I'd be comfortable with the buggers.

Despite Pat going around the shadehouse and sealing up any gap he could find, Kenneth still got in while everyone was having dinner last night. He slid out from behind the large fridge and along the wall. Chris and Pat tried to shoo him out the door but he persisted in going behind the bookcase and other fridges. Chris now dubs the shadehouse as "extreme dining".

He's not really bothering me however. Logically thinking, it's not in his interest to bite me. He's only in the shadehouse because there are frogs there and frogs make a good meal. He generally stays behind cupboards or fridges and he'd much rather get away than bite me. So all I need do is not corner him and I'll be right.

Storm blew in this afternoon. Not much rain as per bloody usual but pink skies due to a dust storm. Awesome seeing lightning streak through that. At least it's now pretty cool outside. Yeah, 30C is now "cool" in my books.

And just another tidbit. When birds take off to migrate, some get just over the horizon then think "What the fuck are we doing!?" or "The weather's all wrong!" and quickly fly back to the mudflats. When knots return they do it so fast that the bloody things ZOOM like a jetplane. It's something you have to see (and hear) to believe.

Birdie question....I really don't know why I've been thinking about this lately..but here goes.

Where do most of the migrating birds in Australia migrate to and from? Is Australia usually a wintering ground for those birds that breed farther north?

In the US, for most migratory birds, a lot of them will breed up in Canada but over winter somewhere down in Central or South America. There are several migratory pathways that most of the migrating birds will take (I think about 4 maybe).

I realize that when I say most, it doesn't really mean anything, because most birds won't fit into the "most" category that I'm refering to.

The famous migratory shorebirds up here fly to Asia (most to Siberia or further north) for the brief summer there to breed while there is 24 hour sunlight and an abundance of insects for the hatchlings to eat.

They spend the rest of the year (the northern winter) here in Australia feeding on organisms that live in mudflats.

There are some species that only migrate as far as New Guinea. There are some that do it the other way around and breed in Australia and migrate to New Guinea or some other nearby place for the other part of the year. Some species just migrate within Australia.

The southern Rainbow Bee-Eaters migrate north in the winter and the northern individuals migrate out of Australia altogether. In the summer they migrate south again.
