Putting together these folders of course info I look at the schedule and think to myself, "Oh God it's a birdcon."

The cooler weather today is bringing in the visitors. After proclaiming multiple times that she was off to get Flyways finished, Ricki ended up doing an impromptu baywalk because 6 people rocked up at once. A family of four has just gone off down to the viewing platform as well. And another couple rocked up just then. Busy busy = Money for the obs. :)

$126 in the Twitcher's Jar so far, apparently the goal is around $400 to buy the 7th ed. of HANZAB. I have no idea why these books are so damn expensive but they are. 7th ed. hasn't even been printed yet, but should be out by the time we have the money.

Hahaha!

A twitcher in birdy terms is a person that travels around specifically to see certain birds that they have never seen before. Often they bugger off as soon as they've had a glimpse of the bird and go in search of another one.

The Twitcher's jar requests 20c for every new bird seen, $1 for a few specific sought after species and more for "mega rarities".

It's non-compulsory and just a bit of fund raising fun. I owe it about $20 so far, but I'm claiming employee immunity.

I'm gathering HANZAB is a bird guide, I also guess it costs heaps due to the author needing the funds to get all the information and keep it up to date and they don't expect a huge amount of sales. Top end reference books are often like that.

Twitcher's Jar I'd asume is like a donations jar to raise the funds for the above resource. I imagine it's like a donate here if you go on any of our self-guided stuff

Ah well, I figured the Twitcher's Jar had to be some sort of tip jar, or donations jar, or even swear jar. I just wanted to know the story behind it, and I was too lazy to type more than two words. ;)

Correct with the HANZAB, not quite with the jar. There's a $5 entry fee for day visitors. Tours cost more. And of course there's income from accomodation.
