I love driving the Hi-Ace. I never guessed that I'd ever enjoy driving a minibus but it's just a really nice car to drive, I was expecting to have all kinds of trouble the first time I drove it but it was a breeze. Or maybe it's just me getting used to driving different things.

I'm burnt again, I really need to invest in some more sleeved shirts for the wet season. In the dry it will be fine because when I put sunscreen on it will stay on, but right now the sunscreen sweats off within 10 minutes, tank tops are no good, lots of sore red shoulders, back and arms for B.J.

Another interesting side-effect of the work and weather is frequent night-time cramps in my calves. Again it comes on from stretching and if I'm a little cold (I let the air-con turn my room into a fridge, it's my only opportunity (apart from a brief shower) to get really cool. But the combination of sweating a lot and drinking heaps of water has diluted me and the lack of electrolytes causes cramps to happen pretty much every night - maybe even a few times in a night. Not fun.

So, today I got to explore Broome. I went to good ol' Town Beach - the playground and toilets are all new and spiffy but the small cemetary on the hill is still the same. The caravan park seems a bit different but maybe it's just because there aren't all the peak season caravans on "Jutland Parade" yet. Noticed the caddis fly cases on the tidal flats, didn't find any hermit crabs. Took a walk along the rocks at Cable Beach, LOADS of bubbler crabs around, the crabs were miniscule and you only really noticed them as a flash of movement as they go into their holes - but the spheres of sand everywhere are a giveaway. Also saw Sanderlings there (new), and a pacific golden plover.

Then went on to Gantheume Point, Anastasia's Pool isn't as I remember it and the casts of the prints on top of the cliff has certainly changed since I was last there. I have NO idea how we got down that cliff, I couldn't find anywhere to descend, but we did it one time, and I was just a kid and managed. You seem to be able to do so much more when you're a kid.

Then had lunch at the Port Jetty. Saw a possibly Masked Booby there - not sure what else it could have been. It struck me as a gannet but a gannet would be even less likely than a Masked Booby, which at least HAS been sighted occaisionally. No more common brown boobies or frigatebirds.

I also bought myself a new toy - an MP3/CD player/radio. Only $66. When I got it home it played Act 2 of The Phantom Of The Opera beautifully for me while I tidied my room. And now it refuses to play another disc. *sigh* I probably won't be able to get back to Betta Electrical before Monday. *cries*

Back to work tomorrow, lots on the to do list, I'm gonna be one hell of a grot.

its not that we can do more, its that we dont assess risk as well.

when youre a kid, sliding down the side of a very steep high rock on your butt sounds like fun (until you get halfway down, realize you cant control your descent and get grazes all up your thighs and arse as i did), when youre older you think you cant do it/its too dangerous.

and in both cases, you are right.

I would never have gone down that cliff if I didn't have a bunch of adults around me showing me where to go. And I got really worried when we lingered in a sea cave and I was terrified that it would collapse or the tide would rise too quickly and drown us.

But you're also so much fitter as a kid. I used to think nothing of climbing 100 metres or so up a steep hill. Now I'm huffing and puffing after the first 10 metres.

I loved Broome! I went as scheduled in July of last year. The northern parts of WA are a grand ancient landscape worthy of much exploration. I followed some of your advices and went to the places you suggested so thanks for the tips back in June last year.

July *scoffs*

Try being up here, and doing strenuous, dirty work in February!

The shower is the best time of the day.

Heh, that's like visiting Phoenix in February. Our July is ... miserable.

But at least it's dry.

We had millions of those crabs on the beach at Cygnet Bay. I didn't know what it was at first, just those odd blob of color that seemed to be moving. The two utes probably ran over hundreds of them every day.

What are the spheres of sand? I thought that they were eggs.

You sure you didn't just have land crabs on the road? We should be getting an influx of them soon as they migrate from the plains to the beach to spawn.

The bubbler crabs are teeny weeny. They feed by gleaning food off the sand grains, creating the neat spheres as they process the sand.

The two utes were used to run the two boats (and us underpayed workers) down to the beach, which is where we ran over the crabs.
