Slack day?
Feb. 12th, 2005 04:55 pmMy first day off! Pity I wasn't sure about it beforehand, I didn't sleep in or anything. Ah well.
At 10 I'm gonna head out with Clive or Chris and check out the bay and see what waders are around and where and in what density. This cannon netting is a precise buisness.
Then I'm getting dropped into town to wander around for a few hours. Yay!
Well, I'm back from town now and have discovered that on Saturdays in the wet season everything closes at 2pm. So I had a riveting few hours sitting around in the air conditioned shopping centre where the only open shop was Coles. At least Streeter's Jetty was vaguely interesting, there was something making a lot of noise in the mangroves and I caught a glimpse of wings but couldn't see much else. Huge sea snails on the mudflats there too. The pearling luggers that used to be there are gone and there are mangroves growing all around now. The tide today was so high that the street was slightly flooded.
Saw a few of the points along the bay this morning, very pretty. And loads of waders on... Wader Beach!
This place is like a big, hot, humid mansion where your bedroom is tiny but cosy and can be cooled easily, the kitchen and bathrooms are on the other side of the house, the floor is covered in red dirt and shell grit and insects have been let loose everywhere.
Oh, and I got my clothes airer finally. 3 times the price I would have paid for it in Perth.
