The turtle saga
Jan. 21st, 2005 03:20 pmMy cake today was a success at FRF. Hummingbird cake - with real hummingbirds! Oh well, real bananas and pineapple at least.
Today I think I did more than I've ever done before. I did the usual ducks and long magpie aviary. Then made some magpie mince and cleaned up a bit inside. Then got roped into cleaning the quarrantine room. One usual person wasn't there and another had to head home early. I then noticed the parrots outside hadn't been done so I went and fed and watered them and set about cleaning up the main room.
The main reason I had to do most of the work is because the 3 supervisors (no, we don't need 3 supervisors, they're just a bit higher up and can come in on any day if they wanna help out). They had their time taken up by 260 long-necked turtles Subiaco city decided to foist off on us. Apparently Shenton Park lake is full of turtles and almost dry, so the turtles needed to go.
Unfortunately at FRF we hardly have the space for them either. A few cratefuls were released in the property lake, but 260 would have been overkill so they set about calling various vollies and friends to ask if they wanted to come and grab a crate of turtles to relocate them to whatever lake may be close by. Then I came outside and was asked.
"Do you live near a lake?"
"...Actually I do... Lake Monger is just down the road, and Herdsman."
"You're taking a crate."
Herdsman is off limits due to it's protected staus and the studies going on there - wouldn't want to screw things up by introducing 20 or so new turtles. But Monger was fine. I racked my brain and remembered Jackadder Lake. That was suitable too so I took 2 crates. That was amusing carting them to the lakes and depositing them. Most were all too keen to get into the water (after sitting in a plastic crate under a soaked towel in the back of my car), but some went back into the crate and had to be tipped up before they'd leave. Lucky no stinky turtle piss got anywhere - apparently that stuff takes weeks to wash off.
And the 3 caspian terns are still at Jackadder Lake. Weird.
I need a shower, I am tres grotty.
I've only heard of Les Mis, Cats and Grease. I adore Les Mis.
