I had the same problem when it lived in Matt's room.

It makes a really high pitched whirring sound which I believe is the fan or hard drive.
Matt is half deaf and can't hear it so it never bugged him. I have very sensitive hearing and to me the sound is extremely irritating and sets my teeth on edge.

Anyone know how to shut it up or dampen the sound. It's like a constant dog whistle and gives me headaches.

You could replace the fan with a new one. Or just remove it, though that may make things melt and no longer work, so it's not recommended :P

I can't think of any other options. I'd probably fiddle with the fan and see if I could make it make less noise, but that's kinda tricky and not usually successful, in my experience : /

does the noise happen all the time constantly, or more noticeably when you access the hard drive? It's probably the fan, anyway.

You might get away with a few drops of singer oil on there or something. (just make sure there's no spillage into essential bits, obviously!)

hey are doing karaoke tonight? Or up for it tomorrow?

There's a party on tonight I'd really like to go and I'm torn over what to do.

Actually I've been ruminating all day on whether or not to go... I was up til 3am last night trying to get an email to send to lecturer with assignment attached, but outlook just kept spitting it back to me.

Then had to get up at 7.45 to go to work.

Worked 8 hours. (just got home and seriously considering beating myself to death with a cushion out of frustration)

And to top it all off, shift tomorrow starts at 7am, goes for 8 hours, and half the Armadale line is down, so ppls are gonna be bitching.

You should go to your party, because if I come to karaoke I'd have to leave by 10 anyhow. Tomorrow sounds cool though--at the place near your house?

(Funny story though--saw your oktoberfest party notice, and my brain connected "saturday" and "18th" and came up with "tomorrow". I was wondering how I was gonna manage to get there when my sleep-deprived brain caught up and thought "why is it called Oktoberfest if it's in September?" Doh.)

Lol. Yeah tomorrow is at Roundhouse up the road from me. Some other KK's people will be there (Tom and Joey).

I'd recommend taking the fan off and throroughly blasting it with compressed air to get the dust out. Then put it back, and see if that helps. If not, then take it back off and try a drop of oil in the shaft of the fan. rotate the blades with your fingers to work the oil in, then shake it briskly to get any extra oil out.
I'd also recommend dusting the rest of the computer while you've got it pulled apart. :)

The computer is shockingly dusty.

I have no source of compressed air though... or a decent vacuum cleaner.

Hrm. I might see if it's easy enough to take apart and clean it as best I can.

You can buy cans of it, though I'm not sure where. I remember the few times I've taken my puta into get something installed or fixed, the first thing they do is open it up and blast away the dust.

(you should see my mum's puta... she manages to get it filled up with dog hair. I have no idea how.)

Hm.. I had a problem like that. One from the monitor, one from the box. In the monitor's case it's the monitor slowly dying. I changed resolutions and refresh rates and that keeps the noise away.. but at 1024*768 it's a nightmare.

The other thing was the box - it was the power supply fan beginning to cark it. I pulled it apart and used cooking oil to grease it up a few times. At first it would dry out after a while, but now it seems to have shut up nicely...

Just be careful when you open things up, especially the power supply. Apparently there's enough voltage left in some bits and pieces after you turn it off to kill you. So. Yeah...
