*cringes* Old AG Fan-ficcy
Aug. 27th, 2004 12:00 pmA few comments/disclaimers.
I wrote these when I was 16, just as the series was finishing up in Australia. I couldn't bear to imagine it ending to I wrote more. A little later I found people had written and entire second and third season and they were online! I was in heaven. In those virtual seasons a young (living) female character was introduced. Obviously the story needed one, because Glory Gemfire is a very similar character.
Yes, I know Glory is a Mary Sue, at least I'm not afraid to admit to that.
I've changed a few words here and there before I posted. I'd really like to go through and polish the lot up.
I write in a very disjointed way. I write scenes instead of coherent stories. You'll notice two of these "scenes" that I've posted are actually alternate ways for Glory to have met Lucas.
Honestly, some of this stuff I've written I do like! I was reading it last night and a few of the conversations made me snort with laughter. But a lot of it does make me cringe. Does anyone write anything that doesn't make them cringe a bit??
I don't think I have anything else to say.
Glory sat on the bed. Caleb stood uncomfortably. Any other girl that stayed at the boarding house would scream at him if went near their rooms. This time he had been invited in.
"Caleb, did you ever meet your sister, while she was alive?"
"My daddy killed her on my tenth birthday. I tried to look after her but I screwed up that night."
"Gage killed her?"
"Yeah. He was drunk, he hit her over the head with a shovel."
"You know that's not true."
"Huh?"
"Your daddy killed her yes, but Gage isn't your father."
"Whatever. Merlyn's daddy did it." Glory shook her head.
"Lucas killed her. He killed your mother, he killed Gage. Gage hit her, but it didn't kill her."
"Lucas? My daddy?!"
"You knew that. Really, deep down you know that. And you've got power like his. But you've just gotta learn to use it properly."
"How did you find all this out? You only came here a few days ago."
"That's why I came here. I've gotta give Lucas what he deserves 'cause Merlyn can't do it on her own. I'm alive and so is he, so it's equal. Merlyn's a ghost."
"Have you met Merly?"
"Yes. I've only met her as a ghost too. You see, always on earth there are two people who have a higher purpose. There's the Devil's Advocate and Heaven's Messenger. Lucas is the Devil's Advocate and I'm Heaven's Messenger."
"I'm not into this stuff."
"You're in the middle of it Caleb. You've gotta be careful. Lucas is only nice to you so he can get you to be like him. And God knows what that would do."
"Why you telling me? Just do what you have to do then. I don't want nothin' to do with it." He opened the door to leave.
"Just be careful and make the right decisions is all I'm saying. Say hi to Merly for me." Caleb smiled at her and left. Glory was happy she'd left the conversation on a good note. She hadn't actually introduced herself to our honourable sheriff yet. Just got to know everyone else and find out as much as she could. "Well, no time like the present." She got up and left the house.
**
She was hoping no-one else would be at the office but there was of course. The two deputies, Ben and Floyd were there along with a few others. Petty criminals. Some kid that had just tried for their licence. She went to the desk. Lucas was sitting with his back to her. She snuck up on him.
"Lucas." He swung round, almost choking on his sandwich. But once he saw her his eyes went wide. Was that terror perhaps? Nah, not Lucas. He immediately composed himself.
"It's my lunch break love."
"I just thought I better introduce myself. I'm new in town. I live in the boarding house. Believe that gorgeous little kid's your son. You're the only one I haven't caught up with yet. Glory Gemfire." She held out a hand and Lucas reluctantly shook it. "Well, I s'pose I'll see ya 'round."
"That you will." She left. Lucas stared after her.
"She's something ain't she?" Floyd said. Also staring.
"Shutup Floyd."
"Yessir." He went back to what he was doing (eating donuts in the corner).
**
"So, it's time for the showdown."
"I've searched ever since I was born. Now I've found you. Yeah, better be a showdown. Didn't come all this way just to admire the scenery."
"Strange, most people do."
"Oh, I admired the scenery. Beautiful place here. Pity you have to spoil it."
"Reckon you're gonna win?"
"Good always wins doesn't it?"
"I'm twenty or so years older than you. I'm the sheriff. You're just 16 year old vagrant who everyone loves just 'cause you're pretty. I could have locked up just like that." He clicked his fingers.
"Well, the odds are on my side then." She sidled up to the sheriff. "This is one thing I noticed in funny little towns like this. People like us can get whoever we want. This'd be the only time we'd come across an equal. How 'bout it sheriff?"
* * *
Caleb wasn't invited in this time. He stood in the doorway glaring at Glory, his arms folded. She looked up at him from the bed. She didn't seem at all annoyed.
"Whatsa matter kid?" She asked, friendly.
"I just heard Gail and Miss Hoult sayin' 'bout you got somethin' goin' with Lucas." Glory sat up. "I thought you was meant to be his worst enemy and all. You're just another person that's fell for him. And that's one thing I do know. I ain't stupid." He turned to run off.
"Caleb!" He stopped but didn't turn. "I got a bit of explainin' to do. I would of hadta eventually anyway so I suppose now's a pretty good time." Caleb turned. "Well come in, close the door. My tricks is between you and me." He came in and sat on the bed. Still doubtful of this new friend.
"Well?"
"Lucas knows who I am. Just like I know him. That's just the way it works. But Lucas ain't no dummy. And he thinks he can win easy. So I'm just goin' along with that y'see? Lucas has this typical male pre-occupation y'know? So I'm just pretending that I'm a pretty, naive little girl that's fallen for him. Eventually he'll drop his guard against me, then I'll get him. It's not just some easy fist-fight y'know?" Caleb dropped his head shamefully. He did understand perfectly. He also inexorably knew Lucas too. He shouldn't have doubted her.
"Yeah. Sorry."
"You had every reason to be suspicious. By the way, we're goin' on a fishin' trip this weekend and you're invited."
"With Lucas?"
"Yes. It's a good opportunity." She lowered her voice and leaned close to Caleb. "Caleb. You gotta trust me, and I gotta trust you. 'Cause this might be the showdown. In the end it's your decision which way you decide to use the power you've got. But I'm putting my faith in you."
"Why all this heart-to-heart?"
"'Cause everyone has a weakness." She clutched the silver cross that hung around her neck. "If Lucas gets a hold on this, it's the end of me. He wins. He's been tryin' to trick me into takin' it off so he can have it but I ain't goin' that far." She began to undo the latch.
"Why you takin' it off then?"
"'Cause you've gotta look after it. Put it in your back pocket or somethin'. Just don't lose it. If I need it, I'll holler." Caleb took the necklace and looked at it.
"But what if I do lose it?"
"Well lose it so Lucas don't find it." It wasn't the answer he was looking for but he got up to leave anyway. Just as he was out the door he turned.
"Can Merly come?"
"If she doesn't I'll give her a good talkin' to when I get home." Caleb grinned, Glory loved that grin. Then ran to his own room.
* * *
"You alone?" Glory looked up. A blonde boy stood over her. He was pretty cute. That's Ray, remember when I came back for a while? We fell in love. You can have him, better than someone else abusing the poor guy.
"Yeah."
"Can I sit here then?"
"Sure." He sat across from her. "You're Ray right?"
"How'd you know?"
"Just heard."
"The weirdo."
"Hey, so am I."
"So, who are you?"
"Glory."
"That's pretty."
"Thanks... Ray?" He looked at her. "Did you know someone called Halley?"
"Halley?" He smiled. "How do you know Halley?"
"She was my sister."
"Oh."
* * *
The pair laid in the grass, gazing out at Lake Jackson, just chatting, they liked that. It made them more normal.
"Ray. I came here and I met you and it seems a coincidence 'cause you went out with my sister. But I came here to find a particular person."
"Who?"
"Lucas."
"That bastard? You mean he hasn't bothered you yet?"
"No. Must be avoiding me."
"What do you want with him?"
"I don't think I can explain at the moment." Ray rolled over and looked at the sky, deep in thought. He then began talking.
"Halley disappeared. Then Lucas made me dig up the grave of some girl. Merlyn Anne Temple. I think it's that kid's sister. Anyway, it was Halley. The body was rotting but I knew who it was. I'd given her a rose and it was still fresh. Man, was I in love with a corpse?" He stopped before panic took over and rolled over to face Glory and propped himself on his elbow. "Why aren't you running yet?"
"Merlyn couldn't stay. She was just borrowing the life of an unborn baby, but then it had to be born. Lucas would have had it that the baby died and Merly lived, but Merlyn wouldn't do that. I don't know if you believe that or not but it's true."
"I believe you. Always comes down to Lucas."
"Do you think he's evil?"
"Hey, I know. I wonder why I can't do anything special."
"Why?" Ray let out a breath he'd been holding.
"Lucas is my brother. He wouldn't have anyone knowing that. Covered it up perfectly. And I'm dead if he finds out I told you."
"Not if I kill him first." Ray sounded defeated.
"You can't do that. Not if you care in the slightest about the kid."
"I can Ray. That's why I'm here. I've explained it to Caleb."
"Shit."
"Don't worry. And don't think I'm betraying you when I spend time with him. These mind games are very strategic."
"Tell me about it."
...
The pair were interrupted by a flashlight and a familiar voice.
"Ain't it past your bedtimes?"
"Piss off." Ray said. Glory rolled over to look up at him.
"Howdy sheriff." Lucas almost jumped. Glory could almost see a faint hint of was that terror!? Then it faded.
"I think you best be getting home young lady. This kid's a bad influence."
"Who? Ray? Nah. We'll get going in a minute sir. Isn't the lake beautiful at night?" Lucas waited impatiently. "Can't we leave on our own?"
"No miss you can't. Gotta look after the welfare of young girls. And I don't trust this boy."
"Well I do. C'mon Ray." They headed back to his motorbike and roared off.
"The bitch is well and truly back." Lucas muttered. Tinkling began to fill the air. Lucas yelled irritated. "You piss off Merly Anne!"

"Matt, go to sleep. You look like shit. I don't think I've ever seen you get a wink in the time I've been here. You're always awake, reading something." He was sitting at his desk. It was a struggle to keep his eyes open but he kept on reading. It was a large book on the occult, strange subject for a doctor. He looked up at Glory and attempted to smile.
"You're the one that should be asleep."
"I'm sixteen Doc. I can choose when I go to bed. Anyway the light woke me up." She settled into the couch.
"I can't sleep."
"Nightmares?"
"How'd you guess?"
"It wasn't a guess. Tell you what.("If you crash." Matt winced. "Sorry, bad choice of words.") I'll wish you sweet dreams. I promise you won't have the nightmares." Matt got up and sat beside her.
"You remind me of Claire. Don't know why, she was only twelve."
"Who's Claire?"
"My daughter. She died in a car crash. So did my wife, Lily. Same crash. Y'know Lucas made me see the truth about what happened that night. I think it was worse than what I thought."
"Shush Doc." He put his head in her lap.
"Are you an angel or something? You've done a bit of good for everyone in this town. And you were desperately needed. We can't live under the rule of a demon forever."
"Maybe Matt. Now shutup." He let his eyes close. And fell asleep immediately. Glory gently put his head on the couch and got up.
"Claire says goodnight daddy." And left.

After something like that happens again (probably with Caleb). Lucas appears.
"Well, ain't this a sweet sight." Glory woke up and looked at him disgustedly.
"Lucas, does the all seeing eye see intent? Or does it just ignore it?"
Lucas has this annoying habit of just turning up.
"Sheriff, ever heard of knocking??"

"You wanna know about me? How I became what I am. Well shutup and listen.
Billy is right. I've always been psychotic, a sociopath. It wasn't for the screwed up mind I was born with I wouldn't have the powers I do now. I didn't do much until I started school. Even then I knew I had to be careful and I wasn't smart enough to figure out ways I could do what I wanted to do without getting in big trouble. After a while you don't worry about trouble. You're the trouble. Six years old and I was playing with a buddy down the lake. No-one around. So I pushed him in a deep bit, he couldn't swim. Every time he came back up - coming back up, it seems gives them some hope - I could just see that terror. I was just watching, I didn't do anything and he knew very well I could swim, I teased him about it all the time. The shock that his friend was killing him. He comes up spluttering,
"Lucas no!" But eventually there was more water in his lungs then oxygen.
I ran home screaming.
"Mum, mum, Fletch is just floating on the water!" She came running and they came to the conclusion that he'd walked off and accidentally fallen in. Idiots they are.
Was at a cub scout camp a few weeks later, summer. Playing a spotlight game in the dark. We had to hide so I helped another kid find a really good hiding spot. At the bottom of a cliff. Accident. Of course.
But at seven things became a little more purposeful. I had a new friend, a pretty little girl called Mary Jane. I had a cubby. PRIVATE, no parents. So we were in there playing a game of cops robbers, cowboys indians. I forget exactly. But I'd convinced her it was better to be the bad guy. So eventually me, the authoritative figure, the good guy caught the crim and she was sent to the gallows. She didn't hesitate to put her head in the noose I'd prepared, she thought it was just a game. But I soon had her feet off the ground. I just sat and watched her die. She couldn't scream, she was choking to death. But she was whispering, pleading.
"Lucas, please, help me, please, help me, Lucas, Lucas, Lucas." I just sat there, indifferent, intrigued I suppose. Soon the whisper faded to silence.
She was there a few weeks. They launched a huge search and eventually someone noticed a bad smell. I was only seven. Figured either I hadn't been there for that long or I'd gone there, either noticed a smell and nicked off or seen her in there and gotten such a shock that I couldn't talk about it. Such an innocent little boy.
But my dad was fanatically religious and cluey. Three deaths and I was associated with 'em all. He always had it in for me. So he rigged his own little 'hunting accident'. Shot me fair and square, never had a chance. He rushes home with his dead boy in his arms. Ballin' his eyes out. What a heap of bullshit. Y'see, that's the human condition, the big flaw with all these righteous people. So unforgiving. You never get a second chance around them, they just wipe you out of the picture and pretend it was an accident or for the best.
I went to hell of course, because God is not the one who forgives. But Satan's a different story. You see down there they see your potential. Well they just loved me, and I was so young they just had to give me a second chance. And the abilities I have. To manipulate anyone from the slightest flaw I find in them. The 'Third Eye' as you like to call it.
Those people kill themselves. I am forgiving. And I'll never stop realising the potential my son has. So he'll get this gift when I die how I'm meant to.
I thought Merlyn was you Glory. That's why I killed her, and she's died twice too. Unfortunately the second time was just out of my control."
