Please post your full name, date of birth, full address, and telephone number (plus cell phone number, if you have one) to your journal, as the first chronological entry (backdated) in your journal, with Private security, and leave a note in your userinfo indicating that you've done so. The life you save may be your own. In the event of an emergency, LiveJournal administrators can view this information -- and please believe that it is only used in the event of an absolute emergency. But you'd be surprised how many of those there are on a service with four million users. And in an emergency situation, every second counts.

Yes, the Abuse team occasionally hears of users who plan to commit suicide, but there are other situations where having this information could possibly be of use to the police. There have been, for instance, phone posts that were interrupted by physical violence before, and other such situations. The Abuse team often gets reports of these things, and oftentimes, there is nothing we can do to help, because we can't find you.

Please take a moment of your time and make this post. Your privacy will never be violated except in absolute need, and though we hope it will never be necessary, it could prove to be very necessary indeed.

I... seriously would not trust that. I mean, it's a good idea in theory and stuff, but I seriously would not trust it. They're asking for extremely personal information. Extremely. And since identity theft is so friggin' rampant nowadays... I just wouldn't trust it. *shrug* Call me paranoid...

I think it's believable, which makes me a little sad. Think about it: I need help, and the only place I can turn is my computer.
Maybe LJ has seen a few too many people log in suicide notes or other cries for help-- there was just a newspaper article about a college student who killed himself and left his goodbye as an AIM away message.

There have been quite a few lives saved and other crises averted because of people on the 'net; we can all think of half a dozen right now.

Identity theft? Definitely a possibility, as is harrassment due to the fact that it's contact information (phone and address as opposed to SS# or bank information.)

I'm not going to post my contact info; I'm not suggesting that anyone else should either. I'm just saying that we pour a lot of ourselves into these computers that no one else knows, and if this is a real LJ-sponsored movement (which seems doubtful since it's not on the main page) it's not that far-fetched.

However, since it's probably not something started by LJ, maybe we should contact them about possible scamminess.

I don't know. I'm so darn skeptical of everything, I don't think I could have that info sitting there even in private. It does sadden me a bit that people would lead an online life so much that this format would be the only one they could turn to in a life or death situation. But I do believe that it happens :(

yer, this one's not for me. makes me sad just thinking about the lack of outside contact that someone must have to have absolutely NOONE to contact if in need of help. i mean, i've lived alone before and it kind of freaked me out but i still always had mates around me, and in an emergency i had people in my building that i made friends with.
