New bird!! - Chestnut Breasted Mannikin (Lonchura castaneothorax)

Seen today at Herdsman Lake. They are native up north but there are few escaped populations around lakes in Perth. I know there is one at Bibra Lake and today I spotted the small population at Herdsman - they were flitting among the reeds.

The rain held out until I got to the dredger where the cormorants nest then I had to make a mad dash back to the car when it started to rain. As it is now winter the water level has risen considerably and there are no waders around because all the wading areas are now covered in water. Ducks and coots are just as abundant as ever. Lots of grey teals today.

Then I got out of the car. Yes, ALL of those birds were spotted while I was still in the car, I did poke my head out of the window with binoculars to ID some of the ducks.
