I hear black cockatoos!

I seem to be hearing a lot more different kinds of birds from my room lately. Just wish I could ID them all.

That's the thing I've liked about working at Malaga with the wildlife centre out there - you get to learn a lot about birds. It was bad - when the baby magpies are making their "I'm hungry" noise I have to stop myself from going & getting the maggie mince & some tweezers....

You work at Fauna Rehab?

I did some volunteer work there in 1999. At the moment I clean the cattery at the RSPCA on Wednesday mornings.

I disliked magpies, having had one draw blood swooping me once. But then I worked at Fauna Rehab and just fell in love.

Yes I do!
I don't get out there nearly as much as I'd like but that's the thing with public transport. It's 5 mins up the road by car or 2 hours on busses & walking.

I couldn't work at the RSPCA - it's make me cry too much. Hmmm...a friend of mine is in the market for a kitten - I'm trying to convince him that 2 are great fun. Where is the RSPCA here?

I used to get swooped so much as a kid - how's this for forward thinking...my primary school was built on what was an orchard. Orchards were apparently lined with pine trees to protect them from the weather or something. The left the pine trees in place & built the school - problem being there was families of maggies in these trees so every breeding season there'd be kids running & screaming & crying just to get to & from school. You'd better hope your Mum had got a car park out the front or else you'd be waiting for her to circle the block & come back.
I can laugh about it...now.

There are few cute kittens in at the moment (what am I saying? all kittens are cute). It's really quick to clean the cattery at the moment because there are so many empty pens - which is a good thing! :) There is a pair of littermates in there - two tabbies - male I think. They are terrors!

I don't see many signs of abuse among the cats at least. I think the majority of them have just been given up by owners that could no longer care for them for one reason or another.

A cat costs $150 to adopt (I'm not if kittens are the same or not). But that includes vaccination, sterilisation and microchipping which is a pretty good deal. And the pet shop can do you a deal on cat accessories if you adopt from there as well.

Where is the RSPCA? Right on the end of the same block Fauna Rehab is on (the land used to belong to Fauna Rehab). It's the first driveway on your left after you turn into Malaga road off Reid Hwy. Opens to the public at 10 I think.

I go to Murdoch uni, the amenities block is right across from the remnants of the old pine plantation there and there are lots of magpies there as well. But these have become so used to people. They come right into the clubroom and pick crumbs off the floor.

Empty pens = good! I thought this year was some bumper year for kittens or something & there was lots needing homes everywhere. I was told by the vet where we got Artus from that most places were taking them & just putting them to sleep :(

Artus was $70 which covered his shots & a voucher for $20 off sterilisation & other things. I thought this was a bargain! $150 is the going rate by the looks but I don't see the point in getting my indoor boys chipped - just another procedure I'd rather them not go through. I wouldn't want it done on me so why do it to the cats. My partner on the other hand wants to microchip himself!

RSPCA won't put down animals unless they are aggressive, incurably sick or injured or have a behavioural problem that won't allow them to be homed - it's kinder to put them to sleep than to house them and have them be permanently stressed.

I would love to hear black cockatoos right now! Instead I hear violent winds and snow! :(
