1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (November 22, 1963)
Not even a twinkle in my mother's eye. I did become kinda obsessed with the whole deal with I was 12/13 however.

2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (May 18, 1980)
I wasn't even a year old.

3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (January 28, 1986)
I would have been 6. I remember seeing it on TV. That Y shaped smoke trail is etched in my memory as well.

4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (October 17, 1989)
I was 9, 5th grade. I remember we had to write something on it in class.

5. When the Berlin Wall fell (November 7, 1989)
I can't remember this happening!! I do remember 1989 however, quite well.

6. When the Gulf War began (January 16, 1991)
That summer had the 2 record hottest days in my lifetime. I do remember there being unrest since 1990 when we were holidaying in Broome.

7. When the first World Trade Center bombing happened (February 26, 1993)
I don't remember this. 1993 was a bit of a blah year for me.

8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (June 17, 1994)
I kinda remember it, but I didn't care. When were the L.A. riots?? I remember them!

9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (April 19, 1995)
15 years old, in school. I remember seeing it (another image you can't forget) but it didn't affect me hugely.

10. When Princess Di was killed (August 31, 1997)
I was 17. I remember mum coming home and saying "Princess Diana died!" and I thought it was probably a hoax but it turned out to be real. Again, it didn't affect me so I didn't care much.

11. When Bush was first announced President (November 7, 2000)
I only remember seeing in the news how the election was most probably rigged.

12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (February 28, 2001)
I assume that's Washington and not Western Australia (our last major quake was in the early 70's, and by major I mean MAYBE 6 on the scale). Don't remember it.

13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (September 11, 2001)
Of course, THIS is something I remember vividly. I was at home and Matt ICQ'ed me and said "A plane just flew into the World Trade Center". I replied "Oops!" I didn't know what the WTC was and assumed it was probably an accident. But then more info came up, my brother rang (it was like 10 at night, everyone had been over for my sister's b'day and gone home a couple of hours ago, and another friend ICQ'ed and asked "Are you watching this?!" and I was like "I am now!" I went to the Trading Post and watched the board rapidly fill with threads about it. Spent the next couple of hours watching it all unfold (I remember seeing the first tower collapse live). Eventually I went to bed and spent a lot of the next morning watching it too. At uni it was all anyone could talk and rage about and everyone bought the newspaper for their little bit of history. I bought the paper for a week or so before I'd just had enough and didn't want to hear anymore about it.

14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (February 1, 2003)
It was a pretty image. Like a bunch of shooting stars. Again, the too fast space program failed a bunch of astronauts.

I've noticed that this particular meme is very US-centered, and therefore involves a lot of events that will really only hit home with Americans.

That being said, the Nisqually, Washington earthquake is just a bizarre thing to include, because most people have no idea it even happened!

Yeah, I noticed it was very American.

Sure it mentions S-11 but not the Bali bombings, which were much closer to home in Australia.

I remember being distinctly horrified by the Bali bombings. My parents had been planning a trip there, and ended up canceling. -_-

Southeast Asia, of course, is of special interest to me, since I was born Filipino. (Ethnically I still am, but culturally, that's highly debatable.)

interesting the same jokes were used for challenger as for columbia...

interesting you didn't mention mother terasas death, which effected me more that diana who only died like 5 days before mother terrasa.

I still remember the news that night. me and dad were taking the piss abit because we were fed up with hearing about dianna and I said "lets time how long they talk about diana for tonight".

they talked about diana for about 21 mins (inc ads) and when they finished it was almost literally "and in calcutta today, mother terasa died. she was a selfless worker for human right. now thime for the sport"

nothing appaulled me more that year than that...

then Michael hutchence died. the following January in the Aust day fireworks, they mentioned di died, and mother terasa and a few other people, but no mention of the only major Australian to die that year.

what is Australia day anyway, other then a farce
