I.E. keeps crashing. It kindly allows me to send an error report for it (like that ever makes a difference anyway). If I DO send the report EVERYTHING crashes and I need to reboot. If I don't send a report IE just crashes and leaves it's button in the start bar to annoy me until I reboot.

One day someone will write a computer program that works...

One day...

...so don't use IE6. I've tried IE6 twice, and always have that problem. That's why I downgraded again.

How do you downgrade.

I keep hearing that it's impossible.

Reformat, reinstall windows.

There might be another way to do it, but that's the only way I can remember. Does it list IE6 in Add/Remove Programs?

Ah you see.

That evil word format.

Do not have CD burner
cannot afford CD burner OR blank CD's
It's too much of a pain in the arse, you can never get everything the same again.

Hmm. I have 2 cd burners spare. Wanna borrow one?

From: [identity profile] gemfyre.livejournal.com
Quite likely. :)

Now i just need to afford more blank CDs so I can get the rest of my MP3s off my parents computer before it dies completely.

Okay, I'll pass it along to Warwick or Matt, whoever I see first.

Actually... is karaoke happening this week? I might come along, now that my Friday nights are once again free :-)

Jassa! Buddy, pal, friend, compatriot....
Can I buy one of those off you?
Real cheap like?

Nope. Putting one in my other computer when I get around to assembling it, and lending the other to BJ already.

the other handy thing to do in this situation is to have a network running :)

Burning is a waste of time, I just yell, "Luke, can I borrow a few gigs for a day or so?" then whack all my junk on his secondary drive.

But network cards and cabling'd prolly cost more than a burner. (They're really cheap now you know... I'm almost gonna chuck mine and get a DVD burner) I could get Luke to make you some cables if you ever decide to go that way though. Network cards prolly $10-15 apiece.

Which version of windows you got?

Win 98 SE.

We have a network, problem is none of us have any hard drive space.

Matt does have a 13 gig hard drive but it isn't installed yet.

Aaahh... 98 is major buggy. That'd be most of your prob. *loves XP Pro to death*

Now I feel like a computer geek, too... I got about 100Gb of free space kicking around. (and my rommate Travis prolly has about 200... because he likes to play with adobe premiere and movie files are huuuge. My one experiment takes 10Gb of HDD space, but I got a HD for it in Performance last year :D)

Oh I WOULD love 100 gig and XP pro.

Unfortunately I've had to settle for a computer that cost me $60.

It is pretty darn good for $60 however.

tee hee...

yep, when I first moved out, I bought a pentium 100 for $100. It was a dinosaur, even compared to my Mum's 333. I've upgraded it bit by bit... I think the only original part is the floppy drive.

Now I got an Athlon 2.6... although it thinks it's a 1.5 because my motherboard is outdated. *strokes computer* soon, my baby. Soon.

Austin Computers I find is pretty reasonably priced for components.

As for XP, it's fully illegal, of course--though tempting to get it from uni since the student price is only $119. (and since the disc I installed it with has so far proved un-copy-able, does not belong to me, and has in fact just moved to Switzerland with its owner.) I'd definitely reccommend it over 98 (you should hear the frustrated screaming everytime I try to negotiate it on Mum's puta when I fix that...) but you do need a fast-ish computer to handle it. I reckon about 500mmx and 20Gb?

Oh I know XP is far superior, Matt has it running and he never has crashes that take down the whole computer.

When I get the right power in this thing I'll install it, but until then I'm stuck with 98. It's better than WinME anyway.

ahh. Does Matt have a legal or illegal version of XP? I ask because I'm curious whether it'll be able to be installed on all three putas here if I bought it... someone told it has a way of not letting you install on a different system. (although I do have a handy keygen and serial changer thingy!)

Could he afford a legit version?

I don't think so. ;)

Last legit copy of Windows I saw was 3.1 back in 1994.

Oh, and our WinME disk. *burns WinME disk*

ah, silly me. ;)

The last legit windows I saw was Mum's 98 (not SE). 3.1--I still remember nearly murdering my bro when he wrote over the 3.1 disks with porn. I still have the old 486 up in the roof, by the way. remember that? No CDROM even. Can't quite bring myself to chuck it. too many memories of sitting up until 3am writing essays on it in the kitchen. And the whine of the old dot matrix printer as it took 2 hours to print 10 pages in green ink because the black had run out and Mum wouldn't buy a new ribbon when 2/3rds of it was barely used.

Never ever seen WinME... does it suck? (I'll admit I'm still rather confused at 2000, ME and XP all appearing on each other's heels... Ah well, I'm quite happy enough with XP to not care what the other two are like.)

WinME is the biggest marketed virus ever.

At least in my experience. It was nothing but trouble. We went backwards to Win98 because of it.

When I've backdated IE, I've always just gone through the windows directory and nuked the IE files, then re-installed a previous copy of IE from a CD I used to have from an internet-connection vendor that gave out copies of IE with their net-connection CDs... although I've been using 6 since it came out and never had any crashes...I do update with Windows Update very frequently though, so maybe you have a bad build BJ.

Of course, you could always use k-meleon or Opera instead... Opera rocks, K-meleon can be buggy but it's pretty clean.

I had that problem for awhile. Then I swtitched to Mozilla. Works like a charm and even blocks pop-ups. Beat that IE! :P

Everyone always suggests another browser. I'm quite aware that they're out there but apart from the crashing, I actually like IE and 99% of websites are compatible with it.

And with my beloved Google toolbar I haven't seen a popup in ages. I will soon reach 300 blocked popups!
