My computer has started to get very noisy. I figure it's the fan.

Is this normal? It's awful annoying.

Could be your fan or hard drive. Make sure you have a backup.

I've had computer fans to make noise like this. It's actually a bad thing. The fan is going bad. And if it quits, your computer could overheat. And that's not good! I'd say have it replaced. I don't think they cost too much.

Generally, the only two moving parts in the computer are the fan and the hard drive.

If the noise is constant, its the fan. Or a fan, since modern computers tend to have multiples. Open up and uplug each fan in turn until you identify it.

If it starts and stops, its the hard drive. Can you say 'worst case scenariao'?

The third possibily is that the case is loose. Place your hands on the case. If the sounds quitens down, then tighten the screws holding the case in place.

There is no case on it at the moment. :p

It sounds like a fan, my parents old computer used to make the same sound - just annoying.
