Outlook Express doesn't want to work now. I'll open it, and more e-mails are coming in, but the view window never shows up and I just get a "not responding" error.

Anyone have any ideas what I should do (the deleted items folder is stupidly huge due to all the spam and doesn't seem to have purged, I think this may be part of the problem).

Please give me useful advice, telling me to install Linux will not help me!

so is it d/loading email and not deleting it from the server (i.e. you are getting the same spam over and over... damn that's frustrating ;)?

but yeah, I'd say there's so much mail on the server that it's choking up. What I'd do is let it download some, but hit the "cancel" button before it has a chance to freeze on you. It should say "finishing current message" and then it'll delete the ones you've successfully downloaded from the server. Do that a few times to clear the backlog--you probably have a big attachment or something holding everything up.

Is there another way to access your email? Like through a webmail client and not through outlook? Other than that, I'm afraid I can't help you.

not really useful since they get removed from the server when outlook grabs them, so the 100 or so wouldn't be there anyway, but still useful. I believe there is a webclient, but have never used it.

install linux! jes kidding ;)

both the last suggestions are useful, try them. other than that i recommend Mozilla (if it will run on your computer, it has been known to be a resource hog) or Opera for all your browsing an email needs. both are easy enough to set up the email side of things (follow the prompts) and theyre a fair bit more reliable than M$ products.

well, from your experience anyway. I've not had much trouble with these certain M$ products, and so don't know how to fix them. and using something else isn't that useful a suggestion either since the email leaves the server when it's grabbed by outlook. unless you can read inbox.dbx files through them...
and that starts being more than easy usually anyway

Is 'Install Eudora' useful enough advice for you? :P

One advantage is that Eudora stores mail in a vaguely standard mail folder format that should make transporting your mail easier...
