Shopping...
Jul. 21st, 2003 11:28 amI just went shopping. Spent almost $40 and it was just a small grocery shop... ouch.
BUT, 600g of diced lamb cost me over $6 o.O. The ground cardamom costs almost $4! But at least now I have pretty much everything for a lamb tagine. Leaving out the pepper and chilli (well, might put a little black pepper in, recipe calls for white pepper). Exchanged raisins for prunes (mmm prunes) and didn't bother getting pistachio nuts because they were all still in the shell and expensive.
In the bargain bin was cheap wasabi and sushi rice. So I splurged and bought some nori sheets and a rolling mat and am now ready to make sushi!!
Questions - is white vinegar a suitable alternative to rice vinegar?
how should I cook the chicken for it? I'm thinking poached, but I don't know HOW to poach chicken.
I have asparagus to put in it also, should be interesting.
Uni starts tomorrow, gak.

Date: 2003-07-20 09:03 pm (UTC)You should go shopping at Kakulas Brothers in Northbridge (on William St), it is very cheap for all your spices (They sell in bulk, they have huge sacks and you just scoop how much you want) and pulses and flours and dried fruit. The have a deli there too.

I don't think white vinegar would be a good replacement, but I am really not sure. Go to a recipe archive online and look up sushi. You should be able to find out how to poach chicken online as well. The net is useful for stuff like that! *grins*

I do shopping for me and Karl (all meals for me, most breakfasts all dinners and lunches if there are leftovers for Karl) and it is about $50-$60 a week. And I always have too much food!! I do my vegie shopping at the subiaco markets, and go to Kakulas and Coles for the rest.

Homemade sushi never seemed worth the effort to me...then again, my favourite sushi resturant (Kabuki) is just around the corner from me,

Date: 2003-07-21 08:38 am (UTC)even if you added sugar to the reg vinegar, the flavor would still be scorchingly acid-y. it would kill your dish.
best to use no vinegar, not even apple, if you cannot find rice wine...but i'm sure you can find it, unless you just don't want to go out again...have fun!
oh...wait...why would you want to poach a chicken? chickens need to be cooked very well for flavors sake and poaching is so hard to control. the meat goes raw to perfect to rubbery in like no time. i wouldn't advise it unless you know what you are doing. just back the damn stuff. oh plus all the mess of poaching..and what are you gonna poach it in? you have to make a stock...nah..too much work.
