A symbol I respect

So, I finally just downloaded the Director's Cut of Watchmen because it seems the distributors don't think Australia is important enough to release the nifty DVDs with all the add-ons. (Please, correct me if I'm wrong, I'd love to be able to purchase a region 4 copy of the Extended edition).
I'm currently watching it, having read the graphic novel since seeing the movie in the cinemas. There was a discussion I read recently about how they chopped out a lot of the sciency stuff in the movie. And last night I came across a scene like this that shat me to tears.
The bit where Dr Manhattan is explaining how the marketing guys wanted him to have a symbol, and if he's to have one, it will be one he respects, and he's drawing the dot and circle on his head.
Now I realise that the movie didn't explain WHAT that symbol is! In the GN he explains how they offer him the cliched electrons whizzing around a nucleus and how it's meaningless. What he draws on his forehead is a hydrogen atom - one electron and one proton, the first element, where everything else derives. It's beautiful and simple and the DAMN MOVIE DOESN'T EXPLAIN IT!!
Boo to moviemakers.
