Date: 2003-05-25 06:35 pm (UTC)What too many people miss is that music is a reflection of the society it comes from, not the other way around. Violence towards police did not begin because NWA released Cop Killer. NWA wrote music about the feelings of discrimination and discontent they experienced.
If politicians are so concerned about music which depicts violence, then they really ought to take a look at the communities which these artists come from. Affluent middle-class kids don't do gangsta rap, despite the fact that they buy a hugs amount of records by artists like Dre and 50 Cent, and that tells you everything about whether the influences come from the music, or are reflected in the music.
