My swag is my little insect proof capsule. While mozzies whine and beetles buzz past and crash into the walls, I'm safe and sound in my little tent-bed.

These guys are Desert Tree Frogs - Litoria rubella. They emerged from the sink when I removed the plug. I am rather delighted by frogs - they are harmless and eat bugs - all good by me! (Photo from last night)

Driving in the Hamersley Ranges is very distracting. You spend so much time gawking at the scenery when you really should be paying attention to the road. The ranges started just out of Newman and only ended when I finally reached my destination at Auski. I can only describe it as arresting, breathtaking, awe inspiring.

Hooray! I am back in the swag (but feeling a little less lonely in a caravan park). There is a spectacular tropical lightning storm on the horizon, but I'm assured the chance of rain here in Port Hedland is extremely unlikely. I remember seeing storms like this in Broome. Loads of lighting right across the sky, but it's silent, so far away that you don't even hear the thunder.

And hooray! I am back on the coast. So good to see the ocean (and lots of waders) again.

It's 1am, and I reckon I've had 1.5 hours solid sleep so far. The clouds have disappeared but it's very warm, very humid and there is hardly any breeze. Certainly not enough to get into the swag. To make matters worse, I'm right next to a caravan with a loud air-conditioning unit. The noise is making it hard to sleep and is also teasing me – they're comfortable and cool in there. I hope Broome isn't like this, but the sad fact is that it probably will be.

27.4C, apparent Temp 32C 85% humidity. Wind – 9 knots with gusts to 13 knots.
