All she wants to do is dance
May. 3rd, 2006 08:32 pmI started dancing lessons again tonight at Crystal Ballroom. I'm in an "Improvers class" which is basically a refresher for people who have danced previously and know the basics, but aren't really intermediate yet. We did some Jive, the Gypsy Tap and some Cha-Cha. I haven't done Gypsy Tap in at least 12 years, but I picked it up again pretty quick.
When I danced in my early teens I was the only one in my age group, so that pretty much meant I was the only one in my class, which means I got private lessons for the regular price. Tonight there were 7 in the group (3 guys, 4 girls, our instructor was a female, so she took the place of an extra guy). But there were also about 4 other classes (much larger groups) on the same dance floor. There was music occaisionally but obviously for another group. I realised that it's A LOT easier to pick up steps when you're being led rather than copying someone showing you the steps.
I wish I had a dance partner I could learn with so I'd have someone to dance with who knew what I knew, and I'd have someone to dance with at the social dances which happen after the lessons. I might stay for next weeks, but I'm worried I'll be stuck sitting in a corner or dancing on my own, or being asked to dance by the freakiest guy there. I'd love a scenario like in the movies or something where I have a partner and we're both really good and blow everyone away on the dance floor. I don't even know how to go about getting a partner. Oh well.
