Sorry for posting about war in my LJ again, not for offending people.
Like I'm gonna take back the statement. War is one big fucking joke, I will stand by that. I refuse to be one of these "oh sorry I offended you, I didn't mean to" blah blah blah. I write what I believe and stand by it unless someone gives me GOOD reason to do otherwise. I won't bow to the sensitivities of all these glass dolls on the MLPTP.
Anyway, where was I? Yes, war is a joke. Does this mean death is a joke? Hrmm... death is useful, it lowers the human population and there are waaaaayyyyy too many of us, and even more that are just dumb.
Do I disrespect servicemen? No, I think I pity them. I read in Snopes that some guy wrote a manifesto about he was appaled that victims of 9-11 got more compensation than vetrans.
Well, here's what I have to say about that.
Victims of 9-11
These people went to work, not expecting to be killed. They meant no-one any harm. They were just innocent victims of a dastardly plot, inspired by the behaviour of the GOVERNMENT, which did suffer a little too admittedly that day. But the key attack was the WTC, not the Pentagon. These people deserve compensation for becoming innocent victims of quarrels between politicians.
Sevicemen
For some reason these people decide they would like to learn how to slaughter people and sometimes are sent out to do it. They know very well that they may be killed. They CHOSE to be doing this. If no-one in the world chose to do be a lackey for the Government then how could these great wars exist? Maybe finally those with the argument would be the ones fighting. They write that these people are just following the orders they are given. WHY?? You don't HAVE TO, you are a mind on your own. For some reason however you chose to be in the military.
In short, I believe the civillians that were victims of the 9-11 attacks deserve more compensation, they did not go to work to die, those in the military do.
I know people in the reserves. They are decent people. I don't understand why they want to be the army but I don't hold it against them as a person. If everyone refused to fight then there would be no wars. Simple as that. And I mean EVERYONE. Not just the U.S. Alot of the focus seems to be on the fact that the U.S. also have "weapons of mass destruction" (whatever that means, the phrase is so overused it's become meaningless to me). Sure two wrongs don't make a right and the U.S. SHOULD disarm. But so should everywhere else. I know the U.S. will win this war, that's a given. It's just the amount of destruction required before that happens. If Iraq decides to use something big the U.S. will just go "smite" and release something like an atom bomb again, and that would be a very, very sad day for all of humanity and what we've strived for. And I hate to think of the sheer environmental damage our petty squabbles cause.
I am a pacifist (generally) and an anarchist. I don't like war. I believe quarrels should be solved between the two with the argument, not by slaves to them. If someone threatens me or my friends I'll fight tooth and nail for them. But I won't fight for some bastard who sits in a room and decides "yeah I wanna kill everything here today".
Okay, well, I think I've had my word now. Hopefully this is the last I say on the topic of this stupid JOKE we call the war.

You ignore one obvious fact... that you simply cannot get everybody to disarm. This simply won't happen. You CANNOT just make bad guys go away. No amount of protesting, candlelight vigils, faith, whatever, is going to change that. There are always going to be people like Hitler, Hussein, Mussolini, etc. out there, no matter how many good intentions are had. There is always going to be some jackass that gets a wild hair up his ass and decides to start invading his neighbors and picking on people who aren't like him. WWI was the "war to end all wars." People tried to avoid at all cost any conflict, they DID disarm... they tried to make Hitler happy by letting him take the Czech Sudetenland, and other territories, and in the end he ended up trying to invade them anyway.
For the United States to disarm would be suicide, for more than just the United States. I don't know about you, but I do like my way of life. I don't like war any more than you do. But personally, I'd rather die fighting to life my way of life, protect my children and my family, than just lay down and die. Inaction leads to escalations of the situations we face.

And "lackeys?" Excuse me? All those lackeys, of varying nationalities, are the reason you still are speaking the language you speak, the reason you can express the opinions without being called a heretic or traitor... And as for compensating civilians more than the military... I beg to differ. Military folks have some of the lowest pay there is, and they prepare to make the ultimate sacrifice, one that most civilians would shy from. Military life is not easy, and military families have a rough time of it. Yes, that's what they chose. But for heavens' sake, somebody has had to do it, or we'd all be speaking Japanese or German. The military is what's kept more attacks like 9-11 from occurring. Anarchy would be nothing but attack after attack, from both sides, and would do nobody any good. It's easy for you to say that you don't understand, and you'd wish it would all change. Nobody likes the state of affairs in the world right now, above all, the military folks. But I highly resent you blaming military for what's happened here.... "if nobody joined the military there'd be no war" is a very very shallow statement. So is assuming that the 9-11 attacks were the fault of the government. Please think some more about that before saying something like that again, because in my opinion, it's a much bigger and more complicated picture than that. If nothing else, have some respect.
I have a mind of my own. And I am proudly going to take an oath and join the military this summer. And I will not consider myself a lackey, not cannon fodder, and I sure as hell won't be learning to "slaughter."

I feel that NL is forgetting that its human nature to TRY to change what you can not. You keep saying "look back at history", well look back and see that humans have always tried to chance whats going on.
The Anti-Slavers were fighting a war they could not win at the time, yet they kept at it and they won. They did not give up, though they realised that nothing would change this time, they hoped it would one day.
Same for the Sufrigets. They kept trying no matter how the odds were against them, and because of women like them WE have rights in this world. Those orgional woman, stood up, were hunted down and put in mental hosptials for their views, but they kept trying. many years later their efforts paid of.
It is part of human nature to try. You might not make a difference, but at least you've stood up for what you belive is right, and spoke out.

Date: 2003-03-25 06:44 am (UTC)I would not be so hasty in saying that individuals choose the army because they want to fight. Some do because they see no other way out of a cycle of poverty.
