Because kids in the western world these days are all taught that they are special and they should be proud of themselves and everything we've all lost a grip on reality.
Many criminals commit their crimes because of their high self esteem, they believe it's their god given right to commit these crimes and feel no remorse for doing so. Kids do really badly in school but are still damn proud of themselves because they are special and blah blah blah.
Really, we have no motivation to improve ourselves because we're taught that we're all great and special from the outset. We don't have to earn the respect and esteem anymore, and that's completely fucked things up.
We're just constantly going backwards...
